Weird Problem Clevo D400E powers on then kind of shuts down but not completely

Hi,
got this weird problem with Clevo D400E.
It starts but then kind of shuts down, I mean by that it's still on but it kind of goes to sleep, even when I'm in the BIOS setup.
I tried starting it without HDD same problem. I don't know if it's electrical or the CPU is burnt. I don't know where to look, haven't found any similar problem.

Try replacing the RAM and see what happens...

I've swapt the RAM around, it doesnt sem to change anything... I'd go for a overheating problem, because the fan never turns on when you turn on the computer, and this morning, when it was real cold, I was able to load a live cd up to the OS... The strange thing is I thought it would shut down in case of overheating but it doesn't, it just kind of goes to sleep, screen goes blank, cd stops working, but ON Led is still on and the CPU fan starts turning on from time to time (it's the only time it happens though...). So if I press the power button it then shuts down completely... very strange

now I can only access the bios for a couple of seconds and it "goes to sleep" again...

I thinks it's overheating, I found a small wall of dust in the cpu fan, but I don't know whether I have to change both the CPU and the fan... I think the CPU works fine, otherwise it wouldn't start like that and the RAM should be good because when its very cold (in the morning) it takes a lot longer to restart ( I can load a live OS).
I have 2 RAM memories of 500 MB each and I have tried swapping them around, it wouldn't change anything. I don't think it's possible that they're both dead and if they were, it wouldn't run so far when it's cold, so I'm really thinking it's overheating. The CPU fan never starts when I start the computer but turns on when it goes to "sleep" so it's not completely dead...

By the way, I have removed every single component and reseat them all, no luck...

I am thinking about a motherboard issue here.

Still I would try with different power adapter first, and heatsink unit (?) as last attempts.

But if it is a motherboard issue, why can I load quite far into an OS when computer is dead cold and not very far when it's been used? Doesn't that sound more like a overheating issue? Wouldn't the motherboard fail at the same point every time ? There seems to be a logic to the failure linked to heat... Plus the CPU fan doesn't engage when I start computer... Couldn't it be a fan failure?

Cheers

That was my remark of looking into the heatsink (fan) area first. Motherboard issue can be an intermittent problem not necessarily constraint to start-up only.

But wouldn't you agree it sounds like a overheating issue?
cheers mate

Sure. It can be a bad fan-heatsink unit or it can be issue with the motherboard not feeding the (correct and at right-time) power to the fan. Go with the heatsink unit 1st, cheap and easy to replace.

Funny but I am thinking more and more of a RAM problem... When I let Windows run it loads and then restarts. I think the obstructed fan might have caused the two RAM bars to overheat because they behave strangly... I'll get compatible ram soon and try it out before I think of changing fan or heatsink... Cheers for that

okay dokay ... let us know. Good luck.

SUCCESS ! It was the Ram... They must have both fried because of the wall of dust stuck between the fan and the heatsink.... Thanks very much for your opinions and advice. cheers

...NOT it crashed eventually... computer very hot and fan only turns on after the crash, I have never seen the fan spin while the computer is working... might buy a new fan and/or heatsink... hopefully it will work

Hope so too.

cheers ...
