Does Firewire to USB work?

Does anybody know of an adaptor that will let me download Firewall from a camcorder to a non-firewire laptop? The laptop is a Dell D620, the camcorder is a Canon DV model I don't care how long the download takes because I don't do it that often, but the quality matters. I see dheao "firewire-to-usb" cables on Amazon but the reviews are not good.

Pixela used to make a Firewire to USB cable but has long discontinued it. It was priced at over $100 per cable. Any cables cheaper than this are no good, that's what I heard from many video/photographer enthusiasts.

Firewire card worked in my laptop . . .

Yeah, that's what I'm finding out. I did buy a so-called firewire adapter card and tried that. I actually did download the video from my Canon DV camcorder. But the resulting video quality on the computer I'm trying to use was terrible, so I don't know if it's the card or the display adaptor in the laptop. Probably the latter.

So it looks like I'm still looking for a laptop that has the overall capability of my XPS M-1530 but will run XP.
