HP, dv8 1090ev. Instantly shuts down IF the ac adapter is not plugged in.

Hello!

I just bought a HP dv8 1090ev, it is less than a month old and it has been giving me an annoying problem lately.

When i play games where the ac adapter is not plugged in it shuts down after around 10 minutes, it completely goes dead(like i`m holding the power button down for 4 sec). I play games like supreme commander 2, heroes of newerth and heroes of might and magic 5.
It does it in all 3 games, there is absolutely no problem if i am just surfing or playing movies.

(((It ONLY does it if the ac adapter is not plugged in, i can play for hours and hours if i am plugged in no problems.)))

Running out of battery power has never been the case. If the battery is at 100% it still does it still goes off after around 10 min depending on the game. When i turn it on again after 1 min, there is still lots of battery power.

The problem which i stated was that it shuts down if the ac adapter is not plugged in, when gaming.

None of the settings in the power plans are set so it would turn off anything, in any kind of way..

I already did the battery check, it shows that it is in perfect health.

Anyone else experiencing this problem?

If anyone with the dv8 could do a simple test where they unplug the ac adapter and run prime95 for around 10-15 min.
This is where my laptop also fails, like it does in gaming.. Anything that uses a lot of power is where it goes off only when the ac adapter is not plugged in.

I´m confused

I would be grateful for any help

Thanks in advance

From what you described I would try with another battery first. Playing games requires lots of power that your current battery might not be able to support for some reason. Yes, I read that you already did a battery health check

It is strange that it only shut down in games, not while watching movies or surfing or whatever u do in windows.. Only when gaming or using programs like prime95.

Yep, certain apps would push a drain on battery life Maybe that surge in demand causes a (failing) battery to be out quick.

Gaming on a laptop, like a desktop, pushes all to the hardware to the limit, CPU heats up, GPU heats up, screen heats up, all drawing more power - even a good battery may cut out, well not the battery, but the circuitry between battery and the vitals.... To test this you can run programs like PCMark, 3DMark, download and run StressLinux .....

Immediately rebooting shows my battery is far from being drained. I never had problems playing Dragon Age when plugged in.

I remember reading a post from the gaming section of NBR (which unfortunately, I couldn't locate) that it may be caused by the battery not being able to supply enough power (not sure if "power" is the right term) to run the game. I don't remember the exact words of the person who posted it, but he mentioned something like how it could "short-circuit" something (i.e. demanding power more than the laptop/battery can provide).

For instance, if I run Prime95 and Furmark at the same time, and then I can't turn it back on until I plug in the AC adaptor.
Then maybe all laptops instantly shuts down, if there is simply too much power usage for the battery to handle?

I would say yes for most notebooks. Many of them would flash a warning that external power source is being needed when running such and such programs.

I have not touched the OS or anything else for that matter, it is exactly the way i got it. I did not reinstall OS, i just kept it like it was right out of the box.

Should i try a fresh install? Maybe it would do the job?

One month old machine, you should not have the issue as described. Call support for repair or replacement, see what they say first since the machine is still under warranty.
