Intel Core Duo T2400 Upgrade

I am an avid gamer and it pains me when I'm away from home and have to game on my laptop since the CPU/GPU are weak compared to my Desktop. I recently upgraded my GPU from the x1400 to a nVidia GeForce Go 7900 GS and have noticed a huge improvement and cant be happier.

Now I'm looking to upgrade my E1705s CPU. I currently have a Intel Core Duo T2400 @ 1.83GHz installed but I'm not sure what I can upgrade it with. I've done a search and read through some posts but I didn't find the answer I was looking for, at least nothing that was a clear answer.

The Motherboard installed is a: DELL 0YD479

Thanks for any help..

The better CPUs in your case would be the T7x00 series

T7200, T7400, and T7600 in this case.

The best bang for the $$$ would be the T7200 or T7400

i had a t2300 and upgraded to a t7600. yeah it was about $30-40 more expensive than a t7200 or t7400 but im still going to be holding on to my E1705 for a while =]

Dave-p said it best. the T7x00 series is you best bet.

Great, thanks for the reply. Now all I need to do is start looking around for a good deal.

well, from my experience at least on ebay, dont pay anymore than 200 for a t7600. $180 seems to be the sweet spot.. i didnt watch or follow too many 7200 or 7400's.

Another quick question, since I've upgraded my GPU and I'm planning on upgrading my CPU do I need to consider a stronger power source to handle the voltage? I remember reading some where that a stronger AC adapter or battery is needed after making upgrades. Below is my battery info, keep in mind i never run my laptop with out AC power though.

Portable Battery

Battery Location:Sys. Battery Bay
Battery Manufacturer:Sanyo
Manufacture Date:Unknown
Serial Number:Unknown
Device Name:DELL F513363
Device Chemistry:Unknown
Design Capacity:48000 mWh
Design Voltage:11100 mV
SBDS Verison Number:1.0
Max. Error in Battery Data:0
SBDS Serial Number:932
SBDS Manufacture Date:3/9/26
SBDS Device Chemistry:LION
I've allready made a mod to the case in order to handle any increase in heat as well as run a program to regulate the fan speed as needed.

nah. for the cpu upgrade you do not need an upgrade in that department. You would need a larger ac adapter for a graphics card upgrade in the world of fx-x500 series, or a 7900 gtx or 7950 gtx i do believe.

THE cpu upgrade will kill battery life when not plugged in though. but an E1705 isnt all that great on battery life anyway. lets be honest.

The larger GPU's suck more power than the cpu. but the core 2 duo processors are more efficient .

considering what the t7600 was worth and what it is now ... its a bargain

the t7600 is the 'best' processor the e1705 will accept
dont consider any lower than the t7200
as then it is more a side ways step than an upgrade

i went the t7600 path and (so far , knock-on-wood) have not had any problems

It would not hurt to have the 130 watt power supply IMO, the newer GPU does draw more, and it can cause your GPU / CPU to down clock.

and if you go the T7600 route make sure it is a T7600 not a T7600G with the unlocked multiplier. (unless you get a deal on it - in that it is less than the T7600) as the E1705 does not support the over clocking of the T7600G it was a feature of the M1710 laptop.

Could always flash it with the m1710 bios.

Alas, yeah the cpu doesn't draw much extra power, and its a fair bit better. I managed to get my t7600g from overseas, then sold my old cpu for more than I bought the t7600g for!!
Just saying, ebay isn't your only resource, and it pains me to see people only use that.
Ftr, if anyone's interested, the cpuid for the t7600g is sl9u5, makes finding it to buy easier.

I'd just hit up the T7200-T7600 though, the overclocking is really not that big of a help. 2.33ghz is fine and dandy when Im just running xp.

And you can always use powermizer to keep your new gpu's temps / power usage down when idle, with the screen brightness down. And RMCLOCK utility or something similar to keep your cpu in low power / lowest p-state when on battery. Those tips gave me an extra 35 minutes of battery typically.
