Hey guys! i wanna buy laptop dell Alienware 17x . Setup: i7-720, 4 gb , xfire 5870 , but i am not shure about power of 5870 in cross. I know, too many of u got laptops with Crossfire 5870, allready.
1.) Can u plz , put few tests with the games like COD:MW2 , Bad company, Crisys, dirt2 here. Its very important for me, otherways i gonna wait for the SLI 480.
2.) how do u think : combo i7-720 + xfire 5870 - is good or processor not so good ?
thanx.. sorry for my english.

1. Waiting is probably not the answer, getting a single GPU system might be. Fun to benchmark with two GPUs but you spend too much time troubleshooting to make it work properly for your favorite games. 480M SLI = 200W Max TDP....that will never show up in the M17x. The only system talking about doing it is the CLevo x7200 but I have my doubts about it.

2. The ATI cards will perform better with a faster processor. I would suggest a 940XM + a single 5870 if budget allows.

hmmm.... do u think 940 + 5870 > i7-720 + 5870 CF ???? I dunno, but i think 2x 5870 its really powerfull. I have got asus G73 now, but i really dont like it. Gsdos, problems with vbios and drivers --- its killing me. Its not easy to choise without test what is better. But i hope somebody can make some test with 5870 CF. i really dont know what to do: i want to sell my ASUS G73 and to buy powerfull Alienware 17x , but which setup???? 940 + single 5870? so its gonna cost me about 3k pounds, but for this money i can buy super B desktop. Buy i want laptop. ALL just what i want to know its : how is really powerfull i7-720 + 5870m CF in games test, if its crap - i will buy desktop plus cheapest laptop, but i dont like it, i want cool laptop. plz make somebody this tests. Its hundreds guys looking for it.

I already returned my i7-920XM + 5870XF because the drivers were horrible and you cannot use any other ATI drivers. Only the Dell drivers support the Crossfire setup. You will have to do plenty of tweaking to get it to work right and you will be at the mercy of Dell to come out with decent drivers.

I had the G73 also and that system gave me less problems but I hate the proprietary setup. In the end I bought a M15x and installed the ATI 5870 that is sold with the Clevo systems. Runs great so far and I can use any ATI driver I want.

I just order the 720QM with 5870CF and SSD last week. I understand the new 480M is coming out, but as NWGuru mention the power consumption. One thing good about AW M17x is easy upgrade later on.

If you can lower down the setting in games, than single 5870 will do the job.

from 720QM to 920 or 940xm is just too much $$$ for upgrade. That is why I am thinking to oc the CPU and GPU only when I am in game. Of course depends on what kind of games. Some required more CPU others GPU or single GPU...etc.

I don't like to open up the lappy to upgrade any hardware so I choose CF. I am sure single 480M 2GB will be almost the same perofrmance as 5870CF, but upgrade is a never ending story. I just want a good desktop replacement I can bring around home and office. If you want a good gamer PC, then look for desktop. You can save lot $$$ with great performance.

wow , so bad to hear it.... u a right m8, the best way , when u can use any drivers. So , everywhere problems, i have seen ur 3d mark test : 22 k in this laptop, its so cool. But tell me plz, which problems u get in games with this drivers??? which kind of tweaking u need to do?

Did u try last dell drivers ( 10.5) ? i heard its okey, i cant understand, why we must pay 2-3k pounds for laptop and they cant make just a drivers for it.

so , the best way to buy Desktop ? i am afraid , there are too many problems aswell.
2.5 years ago i got dell ispiron 1520 and didnt have any problems till now . But now i dont know what to do.

Yes, I hope Dell come out with a good driver for 5870CF. I do believe that 5870CF can be better with proper driver. Physx is more like a joke for 480m without game support.

If you don't have the need for it to be portable a desktop will always be better for gaming.

Regarding the 4870s it does not support DX11 but at the same time the DX11 games are limited and the ones that do support it don't run that well on notebooks. The non-Dell ATI drivers does work with them.

By the way the Dell drivers are the Cat 10.5 drivers but they dumbed them down to work in Crossfire on the M17x.

The 4870s do work better than the 5870s at the moment. Plus I had to over-volt my cards to make it to 22K since Dell is under-volting them at 1.05v. All other 5870 GPUs are set to 1.15v.

You cannot compare notebook GPU performance to desktop GPU performance. They are just too different especially if you are talking about power.

In the games I play (Borderlands, Dark Void, Metro 2033, MLB 2K10, Alpha Protocol) the only difference I see is micro-stuttering with the Crossfire setup. With that said I'm sure you can do additional tweaking to make it better but it is a hassle and there is no way it would be a 100% improvement. Closer to 30%.

With my M15x I'm hitting 17K with 3DMark06. I'm still trying to catch the mark I did with the G73 which is 17.1K.

When you install a 920XM in the G73 it unlocks a portion of the bios to have access to the systems TDP and TDC settings. So I did this....

and it resulted in this...

^^ That's 3.7Ghz running on all 4 cores without any down-clocking.

The G73 shows the true power of the i7-920XM. While other systems are hitting 5K in the CPU score the G73 is getting 7K.

I don't know what the stock score of a i7-720 + 5870 CF is, never tried it.

Dual GPU laptops are really a headache right now. There is a reason there is only two I know of on the market. The new Clevo x7200 is about a month away from release. Might be worth waiting and checking that out but it will be expensive. If you don't care about portability get a desktop. You'll have more power for the money you spend.

NWGuru have very good points, but AW offers easy upgrade in the future Asus doesn't.. I could be worng.

The stock 920XM with 5870CF without OCing will give you about 18.Xk 3DMark06.

I would assume 720QM will give you 17.X without ocing.

ahhhh....I'm really out of it when it comes to the "latest and greatest" desktop tech.

These guys can help...
http://www.desktopforums.com/

Alienware will be releasing a 18" system with a SINGLE 480M.....and it will NOT be made by Flextronics. Expect something totally new.
