Acer Travelmate 8003LMi review - Page 2

Awww, motherfvcker. I just checked my drive and it's formatted as FAT32. Hey rinse, how do I change that to NTFS without reformatting. I've already loaded all my programs, mp3's etc. onto this and I'm too lazy to do it all over again.

Why do all centrino based laptops have the "low end" Ati 9700?
I mean can't they put the normal 256mb Ati in these "high end" notebooks?

It is because they are typically thinner notebooks, so if they put a higher end (high clocked) 9700 in them, there would be heat issues.....also high clocked GPU's will draw more power, and Centrino (Pentium-m) based laptop are geared towards a battery-life oriented market.

ghosting, fat32 to ntfs, and other things

Hey all,

1. port replicator. got it
2. regarding ghosting with wordpad: i can read it while it is moving, no noticeable ghosting
3. the wifi according to the hardware info in the control panel is the Intel one, but yes it has that invilink sticker... i was under the impression that that was the name of the wifi software or button/software/adapter solution kinda like how centrino refers to the cpu/mobo/gpu..?
4. no dedicated home and end keys. I just noticed that the arrow keys are raised slightly higher than the rest of the keys. makes them easier to find?
5. the laptop seems to get warm over the hard drive but warm as in like maybe 10 degrees F more than ambient, as in it is warm but not hot
6. to convert the drive from fat32 to ntfs see the instructions here:
http://www.ntfs.com/quest3.htm
It'll say something like you need to reboot and you say yes. Went flawlessly for me.
Also, I noticed that there are 2 partitions on this hard drive, both fat32. One of them is 46 gigs the other is 10 gigs and appears to hold the same contents as the recovery CDs. As soon as I finish typing this, I'm going to stick partition magic on it and reclaim that 10gigs!

Thanks Mc....doing it right now.

Ugh, I finally plugged in a mouse and it just occured to me that the the USB's are all on the left. Why, oh why did you do that Acer?
Thanks for the info McDanger! No ghosting huh? well I'm *really* excited to receive mine now!

I wonder if converting FAT to NTFS has any negative side effects... hrm... I may have to reformat anyways, I don't like wasting those 10GB on emergency recovery files that Iw ill never use.

And yeah, you're right, the invisilink label is simply an attempt at branding the fact that they have 802.11g, IR and/or Bluetooth on the notebook, regardless of component brands.

ghosting

regarding the ghosting... I want to qualify what I said earlier with: I'm not entirely sure what you're talking about...

In other words, I can still see the words while I move wordpad around and it looks the same as with my desktop monitor, though that is also an LCD... I *think* it is bad when the words disappear or you can see it leaving a trail behind, and it is definitely not doing that.

THanks for the headsup Kev, I am following that thread too.

McDanger: yep, that's exactly it. If the letters disappear while moving, it means you have ghosting - where the white parts of the image take longer to disappear than the black parts.

Right now I am honestly FUMING about PCTorque messing up my shipment. My notebook has been sitting at a UPS facility close to my home since Tuesday waiting out the 4 days specified for "Ground" shipping. I could've easily had it yesterday. Intead I get to wait until tomorrow. Not a lot of time for transferring my things from my old notebook to the new one before E3 and another trip I need the notebook for... grrr... sorry for venting.

E3??

The conference I am going to is the Education Arcade which is happening before E3. I will be trying to get into E3 on Wednesday. Want to meet up?
Education Arcade? hmm never heard of that one. Related to E3 I imagine?
I doubt I will be able to meet with you though, E3 for me is basically a lot of work :P

Are you in the industry?

I'm a games researcher at the University of Washington. The Education Arcade is a video and computer games for education thing attached to E3. In education, there's a movement right now studying gaming and such for learning opportunities as opposed to the traditional studying educational software.

In other words, I needed a notebook that could do games! since I have to demo them and whatnot every once in a while...

Anyway, it sounds like meeting prob won't happen. It would be extra difficult for me actually since attending the Education Arcade does not give me entrance to E3. I'm going to try to scam a ticket or something from someone...

Sounds interesting McD. I work at a software company creating products for the gaming market in addition to our primary markets of film and TV.
You should call someone at E3 and see if they can send you a guest pass. I am fairly certain you would qualify for application.

Sorry to Hijack thread - HEy where do you work Nsi? I used to work for Fox INteractive before I had a career change. 2 of my best buddies are Associate Producers over at Vivendi Universal by the Howard Hughes Center by LAX.

I hope you'll understand, I don't usually state where I work on public threads like these to keep my life simple. We are a software company based in the Bay Area, dealing with 3D content creation, fairly small but very well known in our medium, and we have relationships with many post/fx studios, game devs, publishers, and tech companies such as NVidia, ATI, Intel, Apple, etc... what that means is that it would put me in a weird position if I publically say that I like ATI hardware better on my notebook when I am talking to NVidia at the sametime, and viceversa, and somehow that reached the wrong set of ears. Or when I say that such and such game or movie sucks while the studio is one of our good customers, etc... you know what I mean.

That's why I like to keep my opinions more or less anonymous

Hehe, sounds good.
oh didn't notice pictures of it until now... looks very nice... thank you... I am definetely getting it now, either the one you have or Ferrari one (which I already placed an order)

I might also wait until Mon-Tue and see if the price drops.

btw, do you know if CPU easily upgradable? If I decide to upgrade to Dothan later on

That port is the universal port, ie, you can plug in some Acer accessories to it, port replicator (that's all I can actually think of) I was talking to an associate, and they said that they were working on getting a external sound card using that port, but I highly doubt it.
