No sd reading or camera connection

I just got a new camera (Panasonic Lumix ZS3) which I like alot, but can't get the pics off of it. I have an eMachines m6809. When I put the 16g sdhc card in the reader I get a ding dong noise reacting to the device connection, but the card never shows up in "My Computer". I am not too surprised by this as the new "hc" part of the SD is evidently a different file structure. I am surprised, however, by the fact that when the camera is connected to the laptop via the USB cable I get a ding dong noting the device, but still can see the camera in "My Computer". In fact when I use the SUB cord when I open "My Computer" the window outline opens, but the inside remains blank white and doesn't even show the other drives as happens with the sd insert. I have several usb hard drives with well over 16g capacity that work fine. I have downloaded, installed and restarted the latest media card reader via Gateway. Any idea on how to get this computer to browse and download the pictures on my new camera?


edit--- oh yeah I have XP Home SP3 with all the latest updates.

Does this camera has a software of its own? You might have to get an external card reader to support the card from the camera, or use another card type medium that your eMachines can read.

Usually the card type, however do a windows update and check the laptop manufacturers website for any driver updates... Could also be codec issue.....
