Firewire Port on Acer 5740G

Hi Forum,

My Mum has an Acer 5740G which was bought in the last 4 months. She would like to use it to edit movies, recorded on her Digital Video camera.

I advised her that she would need a firewire port.
It turns out that the laptop doesn't have one.
So I advised her that she would need a PCMCIA firewire card, to give her a firewire socket to plug the video camera into.

I have now discovered that this laptop does not have a PCMCIA socket !! It would be putting it mildly to say I was a little surprised. I don't think I've ever come across a laptop without a PCMCIA socket.

In light of the lack of firewire port or PCMCIA socket, does anyone have any ideas for how to get the output from a DV camera into the laptop?

Any assistance would make my Mum's week !

Ta,

Ian.

Have you considered a USB-Firewire (DV) adapter?

USB2 is as good if not better than firewire, most new cameras/camcorders give you that option... Also all new laptops come with an express port (like PCI-e, not PCI)... PCMCIA is old, really old now... If you do need firewire, get an express card like this... Just been reading up and a lot of people having issues with USB to firewire cables - see Amazon reviews for that... (and that would have been the cheap option)...

I guess we could use a USB-Firewire adaptor, but I've also heard of lots of problems with these. The camera doesn't have a USB port.

As far as I can tell, the Acer 5740G doesn't have a socket for the ExpressCard. Can anyone confirm, as I don't have the laptop in my possession?

Acer 5740G does not have a PCMCIA slot, strange for a 15.6" notebook

Astonishing isn't it !

So the only method at the moment is to try a USB-Firewire converter, which may have limited success?

I guess if firewire was a necessity, someone should have thought of that before purchasing the laptop....just sayin
