Windows 7 "slow" shutdown

Did anyone notice that with Windows 7 there is a delay at shutdown that sometimes can feel like eternity (ok - I exaggerate a bit here ).

After digging around I found out that a tweak used in the old XP days really does the trick.

*do this at your own risk*

. regedit
. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> SYSTEM -> CurrentControlSet -> Control
. “WaitToKillServiceTimeout” : default value is 12000. I put mine to 1200 (one Zero less)
. Save it, restart, next (force quit) shutdown will be much quicker.

I use this on 7811FX and the slow MSI.

Watch out for the odd BSOD... I used this until a file corrupted and ended up having to repair... "£$%^&^&**( Windows........

I failed to see the relationship between cutting down the time of the services to stop and a corrupted file in BSOD. Would a corrupted file eventually cause the BSOD by itself?

"1200" can be extreme for some. Next best (my personal test variant) value is "4000"

It varied depending on which service failed to shut down properly - usually in my case it was the print service (XP).. Found that letting them stop naturally was better... Vista was even worse, I have lost count the reinstalls I have had to do due to shutting the laptop off when doing an update... (Used to use SuperFastShutdown in XP, great until it corrupted some file shutting down too quick)..

I will keep an eye on this under Windows 7. Though under XP I use some other tweaks along with this registry entry - like WaitToKillAppTimeout and AutoEndTasks.
