I got mine with a 250GB 7200rpm drive.
I am looking at getting a 120GB SSD, mainly the OCZ Vertex 2 Extended.

What do you guys use with this laptop? Recommendations, advice, what speeds have you see with the M17XR2?

I'm interested in an SSD myself, but I have the M15X.

I have a 256 Gb SSD as my Boot drive, and 500 GB 7200 RPM drive as my data files / backup drive

Boot times are under 30 seconds

Dave, which drive do you have; brand, model? And have you used any tool to see what read and write speeds you get compared to specs.

I have a 200GB Vertex LE drive in my M15x. I posted benchmarks of it in the benchmarks section. 280+ seq read and 250+ seq write.

I have the samsung PM800 series, which are the drives that Dell ships with thier laptops.

They are not as fast as Intels, Vertex, Etc, but they are also better priced per GB.

The only issue IMO with the samsung drives from dell, is some are not TRIM enabled, and you either have to flash it yourself (which can brick it) or get Dell to replace it with one that does.

I have the benchmarks posted somewhere in this forum,

Quick update.

Got the Intel 160GB G2. I really wanted the Vertex 2E, but 120GB would be cutting it close and 240GB too expensive. I wanted to make sure I used less than 66% to help with wear balancing. I moved my user files to the 2nd drive.

250 read and 110 write. The IOPS should make up for it as I do multitask a lot.

Also a strange bug. With 2 mechanical HDDs, I was able to use AMD ATI driver with the install override. I used this because DELL ATI drivers has a bug. I use 2 2408 monitors with the m17x and keep the lid closed. Monitor 2 would go to sleep as set after 20mins, but monitor 1 would only blank and stay full on power. AMD ATI drivers fixed it. BUT.....AMD ATI drivers would not work with the SSD. When trying to restart, the laptop would complete the shutdown part but would never actually restart and just stay powered on blank...no bios screen, nothing. Powering down and restarting would be perfectly fine. I reverted back to DELL ATI driver, and everything is fine, but I have to live with monitor 1 not being able to go to sleep mode...until the next driver update.
