a little guide to buy a modest gaming laptop

Ive been reading on other pages and it appears no one can tell me something about a cheap gaming laptop i know there isn't a really cheap one, but there must be a decent/modest one, i have some laptops to choose but i really don't know if this one could be a good option what do u guys think about the asus u50f, seems kind of nice cuz of the core i3 and the 4gb ddr3 ram, i also like this hpg62-143cl and the samsung R580 all this laptops have almost the same configuration, i want to know wich one of this are the best for gaming purposes?

by the way those 3 laptops are in a price range of
$450-550
do u guys recommend any of those 3 or there are better laptops to choose for gaming purposes in that price range?

thanks in advance for your answers

In my personal opinion, there is no such thing as a $550 gaming laptop. You're really not going to get anything even halfway decent until you get to around $700 at least. Anything below that price point is not going to have a dedicated graphics card, and the one essential for a gaming notebook is a dedicated graphics card.

yh ive been reading and i found that the best will be the samsung r580 cuz it has a dedicated video card i played some videos on youtube and it plays GTAIV, NFSHIFT, DIRT2 pretty smooth and cod 4 kind of good.

thats the problem i cant get more of 550 i think this will be the best option, but assuming i can get the 700 wich one do u think will be the best?

can i upgrade video cards on laptops?

No, you cannot upgrade video cards on laptops.

This looks like your best bet at the moment. It was originally $700 but got marked down to $550. It's got a weak dedicated card, but it is dedicated.

i think i just found the best option for a modest and cheap laptop it is the asus g50vt-x5 it has a core 2 duo processor 2.1 GHz 4gb ddr2 of ram, and a nVidia Geforce 9800 m ddr3 512 mb dedicated(well at least i think) ive being watching some videos on youtube and it runs pretty smooth cod4 gtaIV crysis, etc, right now i can get it for $569.00 its a refurb but i dont care, do you guys know if theres a better option for that price?

thx in advance for the answers!

I hadn't even considered refurbished computers, but the one you're looking at looks like a a good deal at that price point. The processor may be a bit weak for some games, but you can upgrade that later if you need to.

can i upgrade to a quad core processor? and if i can how much will i have to pay?

im still seeing the samsung r580 as a good option because it is at the same range price but the samsungs have a better processor its an intel core i3, and the ram memory is a 4gb ddr3, also it has a 500gb hdd and the video is a 512 gddr3 nvidia gforce gt 310m dedicated, so im still in a big doubt about wich one will be a better gaming laptop if its the asus or the samsung.

i also look for another asus the g51vx-rx05 this one has a core 2 duo 2ghz 4gb ddr2 and a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M 1gb gddr3 dedicated this one is just 40 dollars expensier than the other 2 by far these are the 3 best option to pick wich one of these will run better games like mw2, bfc2, latest games (im not expecting those games run in highly graphs and run it at 40fps).

sorry to ask this much but i just want to be sure to make a good decision because its not a 20 or 30 dollar investment

thx for the answers!!

You are looking about putting considerable amount of $$ for a quad core upgrade, so why not going for a machine that is already being configured with it? Like the ASUS G73JH per example? This would make more sense to me than just starting out with a small configuration of an older model then upgrade.

To me (my opinion), there is no such thing as a good gaming laptop... You'll never reap the full benefit of PC gaming with a laptop due to a)lower spec hard ware, esp GPU and CPU (remember a lot about laptops is portability and power saving)b) leads on to upgradability issues and cooling.... c) Small screen d) a really expensive keyboard (if you are like me, I am still getting used to XboX joypad, always been a mouse and keyboard gamer) e) touchpad mouse..... and of course cost.... So you say, I can use an external monitor, keyboard and mouse - why not get a PC then that is a)cheaper and b) one helluva lot easier to upgrade...

^^ Desktop is the way to go with gaming (or PS3) One can only do so much with notebook

You can however find "Factory" refurbished deals on some last gen gaming laptops that are close to your price point, this includes models like the G60VX etc. Which sport nearly identical specs with the exception of screen res and sometimes CPU (2.13 opposed to 2.53) of their bigger bros (G71,G72). I seen them on Ebay for $599.

While not new, you can sometimes find good deals. And still game.

My best gaming laptop(If you can call it that) was a refurbished HP HDX20 (HDX9300) Dragon. 20.1" LCD 1680X1050 2.26 CD2 4GB ram, Vista premium Geforce 8800m GTS

It was big, played all my games had a gorgeous screen, best sound of any laptop I have ever heard (4 speakers in lcd bezel + subwoofer) tons of upgradeability and was $785 and looked like it was never even unboxed. =)

I also by chance happen to have a G60VX on order I am waiting to test out this week. They are out there just gotta look.

You do pay for portability, and I don't know about you, I still go to a lot of lan parties and I am glad I am rid of my desktop, faster yes, by a lot, not at all. You do pay a premium for laptops that get near high end desktop performance but right now correct me if I am wrong but I believe laptops out sell desktops now. For a reason.

I used to go to LAN parties and dragged a small foot print desktop on my back It made a difference when I could remove the cover and let the air flowing when gaming. But yes, portability can be useful at times.

I had a 17" Clevo D73 (if I remember correctly) P4 3Ghz, 1Gb of RAM and an ATI 9600... Great for LAN parties, but got too warm... Ended up getting a small case with a big PSU, cheapo mainboard and the best video card I could afford and that was great, apart from carrying it and a monitor and everything else - 8hrs solid on Medal of Honour and UT2003 or 2004.... Online gaming put paid to that along with everyones wives and girlfriends having babies....

Yup I used to throw Large lan parties in New England a few years back (3Demons) and I saw people lugging so much (Not as much as all the equipment and servers we had to setup) but full tower systems. And its more of a pain than its worth imho. But there are far too few 120Hz LCDs out yet and that one part to me about laptops is a hindering factor to really really good silky gaming on a laptop. Actually getting cleanly drawn 100+ no tearing fps in a game =)
