Acer Aspire 5520 will not boot up

Thread Starter
Hi,
I have an Acer Aspire 5520. When I turn it on, it starts to power up for about 3 seconds, then turns off. It cycles through this endlessly unless I remove the battery. If I put the battery back in, or connect the power cable and turn my laptop on, it does the same thing, till I remove the power source.
Any suggestions?
Cheers,
Sharon

Sounded like mainboard issue, but I can be wrong.

Moved to ACER.

Acer Aspire does not start

I have a somehow similar problem with my Acer Aspire 5680. I turned it off on leaving my office and it won't start at home. It shows some signs of power- light on the power button, blinking hard disk light, and fan running for 5 seconds (stops and resumes after about a minute), but nothing else. No BIOS, no Acer Logo and no Windows. The screen is frozen from the start. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You can try removing and re-seating ram, hard drive for start. Leave the battery and AC out and holding down the power button for about 40secs, then try again with AC.

The computer came back to life this morning until I turned it off while I was on the move. Unfortunately, it is back to its still state right now!

Intermittent failure, not a good sign. Maybe Michelle can confirm on this model for you when she comes by.

It sounds like a bad solder joint on the mainboard!
sounds like the mainboard is failing on you. You can try disassembly, cleaning and reassembly. However, given the age I would say mainboard.

Thanks ghn, Jessie and Michelle,
Is there any remedy other than, of course, dumping it all together?

find an old 5520 on EBay that has a screen problem and maybe the guy has removed the HD, etc and is selling for parts.(very cheap)..the mainboard which you need would still be good...swap your LCD, HDD, memory to the replacement and you are good to go

I realize that I did not mention the most visible symptom of all: that the monitor actually has never failed to display something-a vertical band of colors of all sorts. I should have mentioned this at the beginning- perhaps a panic situation got the better of me.

Thanks everyone!

If the same symptom occurs on an external monitor then it is high time to replace the board for sure. Or go for a "baking"

Thanks qhn.
It turns out it works perfectly with an external monitor. Is this a hint of LCD problem?
Thanks

Yep - you are in luck I would first check the LCD cable and connectors first, but yes, LCD seems to be the culprit.

acer 5520

I fixed my Acer from turning on and off . It takes 10 minutes and you don't have to buy any motherboard off ebay.

if u wanna do it yourself yourself you'll need a home depot torch and some practice with it.

Old thread, did anybody ever come up with a solution for this problem? Mine just started doing it.
