newbie with an old skool latitude c840

Thread Starter
i got a new laptop so i wanna mess around with my 8yr old dell latitude c840 and give it to my daughter... right now it has 256 and a 128 memory chips in it... can anyone tell me if this will work in this old c840

OCZ 1 GB DDR PC3200 Laptop Notebook ram So-Dimm. New in factory sealed box, $29. OCZ model number OCZ4001024VSO. Does not include the UPC, as it was used for a rebate. I have several of these if you want to run dual channel.

Details:

• 200-Pin DDR SO-DIMM

• DDR 400 (PC 3200).

• Cas Latency 2.5.

• Timing 2.5-4-4-8.

• Non-ECC.

• Unbuffered.

id like to stick 2 of them in as they are so cheap for me to buy... like 20$ a stick... but i dont know squat about computers... i have read on some threads on here that the c840 can handle up to 2gb of ram...i also read that pc3200 would work... also if someone has any knowledge of the specs on these and if theyu are compatible to the c840 i would greatly appreciate it.... thank you for your time in responding to this old skool fool

According to the User's Guide that I just downloaded from Dell, your computer takes a maximum of 1GB of DDR memory up to 512MB in each socket. It also is designed for 266 Mhz memory. The speed isn't a problem, since faster memory should automatically downclock to what the motherboard supports, but the capacity is a problem. So you cannot install the module you listed above, since it has too high a capacity to be recognized by the motherboard. Instead, your best move would be to buy 2 512MB modules so the computer could have its maximum memory amount.

alright so i bought 1x1GB ozc pc3200 200-Pin DDR SO-DIMM
DDR 400 (PC 3200).
Cas Latency 2.5.
Timing 2.5-4-4-8.
Non-ECC.
Unbuffered and threw it into the old sloth of a machine (C-840) and left an already installed hynix pc2100 256 mb on the other memory docking station and fired the bad boy up! and the machine recognized the increase in memory right away...and had no problems... next stop on my C-840 journey is to replace the 256mb with another 1GB for a total of 2GB of whopping RAM as opposed to 384mb...man even 1.25GB as opposed to the 384mb is a huge difference...but it seems like the fan is working a little harder i will have to keep an eye on that.... and tonight i will give the fans a good dousing of silicon spray as they seem to be a little squeaky
