Odd power issues after applying Thermal Paste...

Ok,
My dv9500 notebook has been blowing hot air all spring. After excluding the BIOS from the equation I moved onto the CPU and lo and behold the old paste is brittle and dry. After dismantling the already out-of-warranty notebook I find I have another problem as I power it up. The power supply isn't working! The blue LED ring that normally should light isn't even with the AC hooked to an outlet wall. The nattery itself functioned for five minutes (oddly enough informing me that my NVIDIA graphics card had been found and was in the process of installing the driver software) before losing all power. I noticed this was much, much faster than normal (like 84% to 3% in a matter of minutes.) Has anyone else experienced this? If so tell me what I did wrong?

84% to 3% - is this the battery discharging? Try with another battery then or without it and see if the comp holds up.

Removing the battery was the next thing I did. No difference.

I do notice a static-like sound whenever I plug my AC adapter. Oddly enough this continues rythmically like the beating of a drum. It's disquieting to say the least. I'm going to do some exploratory surgery tomorrow and I'd like to know what I'm looking for. So any other ideas would be helpful.

I took it that you only opened the notebook enough to get to the cpu after removing the heatsink. I would try again to re-seat the heatsink and paying attention to the screw sequence and not over tightening them.

Did you lock the cpu.

I forgot that once.

I don't know whether I've locked my CPU or not.

Hello again, my exploratory surgery went great. I discovered a plug which I had inadvertently flipped the opposite direction hence causing the malfunction previously mentioned. Now that that's solved I have a new problem!

Once I finished. I screwed the right parts together and reattached the RAM and Hard drive to their stations. When I felt confident I plugged in the AC adapter and, huzzah, the blue LED ring glowed once more. Now, fingers crossed, I turned on the computer. As soon as I pressed the Power button the Quick keys lit up, the keyboard was responsive (the Caps Lock, Num Lock, and Scroll Lock buttons all lit upon pressing) but no startup beyond that. No apparent video signal. I remember hearing that this might be caused by an improperly placed RAM card, but I double-checked and I'm positive I did that right.

That's my notebooks new sympton, leagues better then complete failure to boot in my opinion. Any advice on the subject would be useful. Thanks.

I would suggest again to go through every single connector and verify them. Ram modules must be snug in the slot.
