Alienware m9700 won't power OFF or ON

Hello,

I just picked up an Alienware Aurora m9700 off eBay less than a week ago. Tried to power on the laptop this morning and the power and battery lights turn on but the screen maintains a blank status. I've held the power button but does not power off the device. I've had to pull the battery out in order to fully turn off the computer. If I pull the a/c out, the power button blinks an orange flashing status as if it's in sleep mode. If I plug the a/c adaptor back in, the power button goes to a full blue illumination. I've pulled the memory sticks out and reset them as well as the two hard drives. Still does nothing. I think the motherboard is bad.

Any recommendations on how to resolve this? Should I open up a dispute on eBay to return this? I know the seller will fight this return since it's been nearly 7 days since I received the item.

Thanks for your responses.

I got the computer screen to turn on. I'm now getting a "CMOS Checksum Bad" error. It doesn't appear to be a operating system problem since it will not boot from CD in CD/DVD drive. Is this a bad BIOS or battery?

Likely a bad CMOS battery in the work.

Thanks. I'll give it a try. BTW, I had a hard time finding the battery model online. I had to dissect the battery to get the model number off and unfortunately rendering it useless. The model number is CR-2016. You can find it through this link:

I usually just go to eBay and search "cmos battery brand"

Replaced the CMOS battery. Unfortunately that was NOT the problem. After doing more research it appears to be a bad cap on the mobo. To replace the mobo is around $250-400. However, I found a seller on eBay that will repair the caps on 9700 models for $150 plus shipping.

Nice. Ask if the seller is willing to take some pics of your bad caps and share
