Laptop LCD Panel technology improvements

One of the big decision makers for me in purchasing a laptop is the quality of the LCD panel.

I was disappointed recently when a friend bought a new Asus G73JH-X1 laptop. The viewing angle was extremely poor, and the contrast overall wasn't that great.

Has laptop LCD panel technology improved in the last four years (since 2007 when I bought my Dell Inspiron e1705)? And has there been any news on any upcoming advancements?

There have not been many improvements. The biggest one is LED backlighting, which allows the same levels of brightness with less power consumption. You can now buy RGBLED screens that are supposed to have better color accuracy with some notebooks. Regarding viewing angle, in-plane switching (IPS) is still one of the best technologies, but I've only known that to be on one single notebook model in memory, and it was released in 2006 I think, so by now it's totally out of date. Some televisions and monitors now have edge-lit screens for more even brightness, but again, that's a technology that I have not seen on notebooks. Overall, your odds of getting a notebook with a really good screen are theoretically better if you buy a notebook from an LCD company (Samsung, Sony, LG, etc.) but there are really no guarantees.

Just checked Wikipedia and apparently "E-IPS" made it on the scene recently, though I don't know if it's available in notebooks yet...

According to some posts on the Digital Photography Review forum, the HP Elitebook 8740w can be purchased with a 10-bit color IPS screen that HP calls DreamColor, although doing so will add $550 to the already expensive price of the notebook.
