Going back to Asus G73JH ATI drivers

Thread Starter
Sorry for the multiple threads, having major issues with my new Asus G73JH.

I cleaned out my drivers using driver sweeper, uninstalled the ATI catalyst manager that my friend installed from the ATI site (mobility version). Didn't see a driver in the add/remove section but cleaned it out with driver sweeper.

Restarted in safe mode and tried to install ATI Catalyst manager but had an issue called "Failed to load detection driver". Downloaded the Microsoft C++ SP1 package (called something like that) and still would get the message. Rebooted normally outside of safe mode and catalyst installed okay. I got the set up files from the Asus download area for this particular laptop.

Didn't see a driver get installed, just Avivo...am I missing something? I downloaded the driver from VGA section of the Asus site. I don't have the option to go native resolution so I'm guessing the driver never got installed. I went back to Asus ATI drivers because Starcraft 2 crashes in the first chapter of the campaign.

I appreciate all or any help.

Thanks

Okay...man finally got it all fixed. I highly suggest staying with the Asus drivers and to not use the latest ATI made mobility Catalyst drivers. The laptop is now ready to go! Now I see the true potential of this beast. The keyboard issue I fixed by disabling the mouse track pad in the bios. Since I use an external mouse, I don't miss it at all. No typos in my sentences anymore!

Here's to Starcraft and more gaming!

Huh, so the problem all along was the new ATI drivers? I guess the phrase "if it's not broke, don't fix it" has some truth to it!

I'm glad you got it straightened out

Yep, I did a ton of research and found other people with the same issue. One guy went really in depth to test out everything from internal temperatures, heatsink issues, and his final conclusion was the ATI drivers haha. Wow...anyhow, now I'm a happy gamer and proud owner of an Asus beast.

Yes stick with Asus drivers, the ATI drivers are just not made for Asus card and I've done the test myself to prove it:

For people who having GSOD issues, I was testing 3 different units with the same hard drive that has been install/uninstall with different version of drivers all got same problem when running Furmark:

System freeze in about 5 minutes and happens every time:

Another unit with BSOD in about 2 minutes:

Another one with pink screen:

What I did was just press F9 and restore the hard drive back to factory settings and see this, now it can run Furmark for hours without any problems:

Wow this is interesting

Well this is interesting,

I got a G73JH, playing World or Warcraft, Unreal Tournament 3, Street Fighter IV and never got any problems.

The day i got Starcraft 2, i could not even pass the 1st mission without saving each 5 minutes then got the cinematic wich i cannot see either i have to escape.

BSOD and i have to push power for 5 seconds.

Yesterday i ran SF2 for 1 hour (ZOMG) with GPU-Z monitoring. Fan seems stuck at 30%. Temperatures goes around 89c

I wont go back to factory settings because if i need to reinstall everything im just gonna install Windows 7 Ultimate.

Ill try that tonight!

*crosses fingers*

ATI announced a fix for StarCraft II users - 10.7a

Give that a try,

cheers ..

Well this is it.

With Asus Drivers:
1 - Starcraft 2 is ok
2 - The 1920x1080 resolution is overscanned and i cannot see the Starcraft menus.

With ATI 10.7 Drivers:
1 - Starcraft 2 crash BSOD
2 - The 1920x1080 resolution is perfectly rendered.

Way to go!!!
Its the first time since a lot of years that im considering NVDIA.

What about the 10.7a?

Yeah a friend of mine got a G73 at first I was whoa. Then he flashed his Bios and lost the keyboard lights, then he has the same Vid driver issues now I am like WHOA I am not going near one of those, or an ATI card at this point.

imho I feel ATI has "never" put out good drivers. Good hardware yes, drivers, never. I will continue to stick with nVidia cards me thinks. I am also skipping the G73 gen hardware from Asus, waiting to see what comes next maybe some maturity.

http://www.asusrog.com/forums/showthread.php?519-G73Jh-GSOD-Vbios-Update

There is an updated vbios which fixes the gsod issue. If you dont want to flash the vbios there is a sticky with a link to the asus drivers there as well. I flashed my vbios and ran furmark and 3dmark for hours without a single problem.

When i play mw3 i get after a minute of play a grey striped screed, and of course i have to reboot. And i seem to have problems with the audio driver i get: Unable to find SRS device!. It's very frustrating and i get these with new drivers. If you can help, i would surely appreciate it.

Have you tried the advice from perithimus' post above, updating VBIOS?

cheers ...

No i've read many people fried their laptop with VBIOS update.

Then I would suggest a system restore to original state first

cheers ...

According to the thread I linked it's almost impossible to do it wrong, and if you do you can always blind flash back. It was pretty easy and seemed to fix my problem.

Try going here

What you tried are the only fixes I know for the gsod. I did them and I can play Skyrim for hours.
