Acer Aspire 5935G DVD Problem

Hi all new to the forum,
My problem is the notebook in question has decided to no longer play DVDs, CD's, CDR's, DVDR's etc.Yet it will play Blu-Ray discs fine. When trying to play a DVD or other the computer will not even register that it has been inserted, giving me no error messages.

On my old Acer notebook that i had prior to this one i had a simillar problem but the other way round (not playing Blu-Ray discs).

I have contacted Acer i they have said to complete a full system restore, which i did try on my previous laptop to solve the problem to no avail.

My thinking is that it surely can't be a problem with the lens, because it will play Blu-Rays fine.

Things i have already tryed...
Downloaded up to date drivers
Unistalled and reinstalled disc drive
Tryed multiple discs

Anyone with any info on fixing this situation will be greatly recieved.

Thanks in advance,
Alex

To resolve this problem, remove the affected filter drivers. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click StartCollapse this imageExpand this image

, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click regedit in the Programs list.

    Collapse this imageExpand this image

If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.
  2. Locate, and then click the following registry subkey:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Caution There can be many instances of the registry subkey that is mentioned in step 2. You must make sure that you are in the appropriate registry subkey before modifying the UpperFilters and the LowerFilters values. To verify that you are in the appropriate registry subkey, make sure that the Default data value is DVD/CD-ROM and the Class data value is CDROM.
  3. In the right pane, right-click UpperFilters, and then click Delete.
  4. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the UpperFilters registry entry.
  5. In the right pane, right-click LowerFilters, and then click Delete.
  6. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the LowerFilters registry entry.
  7. Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.
It may work, but could still be a hardware issue....

Thanks for the clear and precise explanation to the problem.

Unfortunatly it hasn't made it work.

Is there anyone way of determining if it is in fact a software or hardware problem?

Thanks again,
Alex

Basically try the drive in another system - if it all works its going to be a software issue, or a hardware problem (ie motherboard) related to the original system... If the drive still exhibits the same symptoms, assume it is a duff drive...
