MP8708

Ok heres my situation, I bought a Gateway MP8708 some years ago for my kid. I thought the motherboard burnt out but I was wrong. It was taken to a repair guy who repaired it for about $150 and said it had something to do with the power (that's why it wouldn't turn on, nor did it have lights or any sign of life). About 3 months later I find out that its doing that same thing again. My kid never told me when it happened, don't ya just love that. It's obvious it's the same problem as before. Something with the power, but not the power supply. What would I be looking for in this? Would this be a button issue, maybe stuck or replacement or DC jack? If its like a jack prob, then that would require soldering. Not my area. But any suggestions for the answer would be helpful

With the unit plugged in, carefully try to wiggle the power jack...see if there is any play.see if the power light comes on...if so, its probably a bad solder connection on the mainboard where the dc jack connects...the young fellow has to understand that laptops in general are reasonably delicate and jamming stuff in holes/yanking things etc just doesnt fly very well..I know how kids can be..lol

Ty for replying. I tried your suggestion and still no dice. Hopefully its just a new power button issue. I just don't want to spend another $150 on something I could maybe repair myself for under $20. Especially not sending it to that guy who repaired it the last time. Any other suggestions are welcome.

Shpuld take it back to the repairman - if he is worth his repair, he would redo it for free... Any repair like that should come with warranty...

I would but I don't trust that guy and as far as a warranty most of them don't warranty don't parts after 90 days and Its been 90 days. I really wish I was told that it had the same problem again. That repair guy was recommended by a friend. I took another laptop to that same guy the same time I had this 1 in for repair and had a new backlight put in. Well the backlight went out on it sortly after he fixed it. I ended up having to have the backlight redone so you can see why I wouldn't want him to do work for me again. You just can't trust a lot of people no a days.

gateway mp series all the way to ma7 ma8  have a cold solder problem that makes power jack fail and some time will fry motherboard actually burn it to the point it can not be repaired if you have any connection problems with power supply shut it off remove battery and take it in for service it will prob need to replace power jack 50 to 100 dollar repair depends on how much damage the arching has caused to the motherboard  i repair them all the time and will have to replace the board if they want to spend the money  i really would weigh the cost for a new laptop or repairing the one you have it will break again if you use it lying in bed get a power supply with a 90deg connection terminal it will help out gateway has 2 weak points i see in the laptops ma-1 to

ma-7  left hinge breaks and the cold solder issue with dc power jack  other then that they are great  fast and affordable  hope this will help some one and have fun
