nx9420 & Docking Station PA287A#ABA DVI Port Not Working

post #1 of 10

Hi everyone,
I'm trying to hook up an HP nx9420 laptop to an HP Advanced Docking Station (PA287A#ABA). I'm using dual monitors which are connected to the docking station's VGA and DVI ports. The Monitor connected to the VGA port worked fine. The DVI one doesn't show up at all. Does anyone have any experience w/ this setup? I would appreciate any advice.
Thanks.

Take a look at this FAQ from HP. Good luck.

Thanks for the link. I'm using XP. I followed the instructions, but the LCD monitor connected to the DVI port is not showing anything. In the Display Properties window, 2 monitors are shown. I selected the second monitor and checked the "Extend the desktop onto this monitor" option, then clicked Apply, but the second monitor is still blank. The "Extend the desktop onto this monitor" option is automatically unchecked. Has anyone gone through this problem?

I would try with the latest GPU driver or re-install it if you already have it. Is the dock being plugged in to an electrical outlet?

I installed the latest bios and video drivers from HP. The DVI port is still not working. Even though bought new, I fear the DVI port on the docking station is faulty or the DVI-D to VGA adapter is faulty . I'm thinking of returning the docking station. Thanks for the support QHN.

I finally got hold of (borrowed) an lcd monitor w/ dvi-d (male) interface and plugged that into the dvi-d (female) interface of the docking station. I also plugged another lcd monitor into the vga interface of the docking station. After turning on the laptop, both lcd monitors lights up, dualscreen .
Even though the DVI-D_to_VGA adapter spec indicates that it's compatible w/ VGA monitor interface, I suspect that the dvi-d_to_vga adapter is NOT compatible w/ VGA monitor interface. This means I have to purchase a monitor w/ dvi-d interface. Bummer.

Yep. That is one thing about DVI that I am having beef with sometimes. Trade the monitor in.

After googling around, I found an additional fact... DVI-D interface requires DVI monitor interface. I hope this post is a help to others w/ similar problem.
@qhn, thanks for the help.
Now that the problem is solved, how do I close this thread?

Threads at NBF are rarely being closed. They will just move down the chain when no one post in them.

And yes, it will be helpful for others reading your experience.
