Dell XPs m1730, 3dmark06 yesterday 8184, today; 2634 .. SC2 today, 2fps.

I got some serious issues with my laptop.
I got a Xps M1730, details at the bottom.
I play CS, CSS, WC3 and last 6 months I have had bad performance on everyone of them. But I havent had time to bother, but after Sc2 didnt work properly on Low I got little angry.

So I searched the web, for fan control, heat isssues, etc, and I see many people have struggled with this, to bad most of it is pretty old, and updating to a two year old driver doesnt work as well.

I have around 50 fps in regular Counter-strike.
I have around 30 in the start of SC2, and in the battles, down to 1 or 2...

So now, here is the strange thing.
I have been trying to hack this ty computer, but didnt find anything, just installed everst ultimate, fraps to check out temperature and fps.

Yesterday I tried 3dmark06, and I got a score of 8184 with the graphic cards in SLI. (5372 without SLI)
And I invited a friend on SC LAN. And we played all night, and the fps was working pretty good. Every setting is set on low of course, but I had easily 60/70 fps even in the greatest 2vs2 400 units battles.

But today, without doing anything else then turning on the computer, my fps has dropped like insane.
I tried running 3dmark06 again with SLI, and guess the score?
2634!! Thats pretty awesome, on one day 3dmark06 has dropped 6000 points.
The even cooler thing is that yesterday my cpu was at around 70/80 degrees. Vacuum cleaned it today, and it is at around 50.
So with the CPU temperature cooler I get worse performance. And that is something who really grinds my gear.

Does the CPU on dell xps 1730 clock down if it gets cooler and clock up when it gets hotter?

So If anybody could help me I will greatly appreciate it.
Specs to follow.

Windows 7.
CPU: Intel Core Duo T7700 @ 2.4 ghz
Memory: 2048mb
Bios: A9 (I know some newer bios has arrived, but I do not have a battery, So i can not flash the bios, and I havent found any hackers who have given out a "howto")
GPU: Nvidia Geforce 8700 GT x 2 (SLI) (Approx total memory 1010mb)
Current display mode: 1440-900 (Starcraft I use the lowest, 1024 is it? And does current display have anything to do with anything?)
Drivers: 258.96_notebook_winvista_win7_32bit_international_whql
Anti aliasing and all other who takes performance is turned off.

So, this should run SC2 on the lowest, at least without getting 2 fps.
Anyone out there who could help me?

I would try to uninstall the driver completely (using Driver Cleaner to be sure to remove every single file that is related to it) and try using an old GPU driver like 196.xx

Look at the NBF Mobile Force Driver section. We have a good tip there as how to install the GPU correctly.

cheers ...

Where is the Mobile Force Driver? Is on the forums or guides or? Tried to search for it, but didnt find anything.
And I downloaded driversweeper 2.1.0 from guru3d, any experience with that one? work good?
and thanks alot for answering

It didnt work as well. Clean installed 196 drivers and gave me even less fps. So installed the newest drivers again, so its a little bit better. But did not fix my problem. Anyone out there with a serious real fix?

Play with different drivers. I have a pretty bad feeling that the GPUs are acting up.

cheers ...

Have you benchmarked single gpus? Any way to do that? If one is dead it might be severly impeding the other but still allowing to boot if they act as one card.

New 3dmark results.

3dmark 06.
2640 @ Nvidia 258.96 @ SLI

2603 @ Nvidia 257.21 No SLI
2627 @ Nvidia 257.21 @ SLI

2605 @ Nvidia 197.16 No SLI
2640 @ Nvidia 197.16 @ SLI

Somebody who have any conclusion about what is wrong with my system?

I cant understand this score, when I had 8164 for two weeks ago.

Any tips boys?

well I might suggest a format and clean install with the latest drivers

that will eliminate any software / driver issues

if you still get bad scores, it would point to the GPUs as your problem.

you may want to try to run Dells Diagnostics and see if aqnything comes up before anything else

format can clean install seems like a good idea;
otherwise warranty?

All right, clean install, format both c: and d: everything was gone. Installed windows 7, latest nvidia driver, directx etc.
And guess the score, hold your horses......... 2584.. Even less than before the format.

The thing I do not understand is this:
My computer have given bad performance last 6 months, then I had the day with 8184 in score. And SC2 was working perfectly.
Then the day after it goes down to 2634.
It makes no sense, If it had been the GPU, why did it work as well that day? Because it have had bad performance the last 6 months. Crazy dell shit.

I ran Dell diagnostics, didnt find any problem with anything..
Can I visually see that the GPU is messed up?
Burned connections or something?

Thanks for answers.

And the computer was bought refurbished on ebay for 2years ago, Ill guess Dell is not to eager to send me a new graphic card.. )

well it does not seem like the issue is the GPU per say based on the lack of BSOD and errors

It makes me think the issue maybe a down clocking problem and the CPU could be part of it.

What are the temps of the GPU ?

Run CPUz and GPUz and check the clock speeds

Check that speedstep is enabled in the BIOS

try using the NVIDIA control panel as well, see if you can bump the clock speeds and and re-test

also meant to confirm is this issue only with SC2

does counter strike still play OK ?

Because there is a known bug with SC2 and temps / FPS

No, no games work like it should. I remember having 100 fps with my T-Bird 1400 mhz on CS. Now I have around 50-60..
well it all points to a GPU problem, but the lack of errors makes it a ???

can you verify the GPU / CPU clock speeds are where they should be?

Do we have any program for that?
Try Riva Tuner, and Ntune

Ntune is a NVIDIA Over Clocking tool

GPU core(3d) : 625.000 MHz
GPU memory : 800.000 MHz

Any other information you need to make an conclusion?

Thanks a lot for your time, appreciate it!
