Motherboards and DC Jacks configuration

Hello all,

A friend of mine yesterday gave me their broken 17" Satellite P305-8842 laptop after it stopped working. Well they were in the living room with the laptop plugged up when their pet dog ran by in full force, catching the cable, yanking the laptop off and onto the floor.

The result was a laptop that did NOT power on. My friend went out and bought a new i7 laptop today and just told me to fix and keep the other one for myself. I've disassembled it and thus far found the DC power cable/jack mounted to the case was cracked and the bezel molding holding it in place was shattered.

My voltmeter tells me that there IS 19v of current getting to the part where the DC adapter plugs into the motherboard, but there still is NO power on it. I'm assuming that the motherboard is also bad??

Anyway the model of the motherboard is A000034430. I looked online and found that motherboard for like $300... way too expensive. However I found others with different model numbers and I was wondering what is compatible with the same cpu and what isn't??

Have you checked on ebay to see if there is a parts machine with a bad LCD. Those can go pretty cheap....Just a matter of transfering your good LCD...to the base of the parts machine along with your HDD and memory (these are normally removed). hopefully, the LCD on your machine wasnt damaged in the fall as well...

The DC Jack is what needs to be replaced not the motherboard. In that model the jack is seperate. You can purchase that part through us, we are National Parts Depot, an authorized Toshiba parts distributor.

Any questions feel free to browse our website at www.nationalparts.com or contact us directly at 800-524-8338.

Would you want to contact Steve (ADMIN) and set up a way that you can be part of NBF resellers?

cheers ...

Actually the LCD is in perfect shape, no cracked anything on it. I checked and there were no parts machines on eBay, instead I'm getting parts like replacement base, AC power plug and even a replacement motherboard.

Well I have the laptop disassembled and I do know the jack is seperate. When I was testting current at the end that physically plugs into the motherboard, I was still getting 19v just fine, however the motherboard was unable to power up. That's what is leading me to believe it's the motherboard.

There still could be a bad connection (solder joint) on the dc board

I'm counting on that being the problem, a simple cheap fix and can return the motherboard shortly there after.

This jack doesn't solder on. It plugs in.

Awesome that it just plugins in. I've seen this happen with many laptops way too easily and most of the time for me it's been a solder joint. Do most Toshiba models have plugin DC jacks?

All of the new models have plug in jacks.

I do know that all the new ones (including this dead one) have plug in jacks. Is it possible for the actual jack itself to get damaged in a way that where the plastic piece plugs into the motherboard is still showing 19v of electricity, yet the board does not power up?

I ordered a replacement jack and motherboard just in case it is the jack and can return the motherboard.

Yes. We see it all the time and sell at least 200+ jacks per month.

"All of the new models have plug in jacks."

Could you give us an idea of about what model this started so we can file that away in our memory banks...lol...tks

A105 and up.
Actually I digress, A100/105 are the last ones with the soldered DC Jacks. A130/135 are the next ones up and have plug ins. P100/105 are soldered. P205 and up are not.

Tks for the info...qhn, might be a nice little sticky as this problem is quite common and a lot of queries on here about dc jack problems...you might also want to modify the title of the thread now to soldered/plug in dc jacks
