XPS M1710 Current 7900GS vs FX1600M

Hi, my current laptop's specification is as follows:

Dell XPS M1710
Windows 7 64-Bit
Core 2 Duo T7200 2GHz
512MB Go 7900GS
4GB RAM

I purchased this laptop faulty around Christmas time, I replaced many parts one of which being the GPU, it originally had a 7900GTX, which was broken, I tried the oven trick twice but couldnt even get picture on the screen, so decided to buy a new gpu. It was a choice between a used 7900GTX or a brand new 7900GS, I chose the GS thinking that as it was new it'd hopefully last longer.

Anyway, the 7900GS is still working fine, but I'd really like to upgrade it, not just to help with games but I have had a few minor issues with the 7900 and Windows 7. I understand that the best card for the M1710 is a 7950GTX, however I can't find one of these right now and when they do turn up they're very expensive! So really it would be between a 512MB 7900GTX or a 256MB Quadro FX 1600M (which I believe is essentially an 8700M GT and will work in the M1710). The thing I wanted to know is how would these two cards compare in games to my current 512MB 7900GS, especially seeing as the 1600M is only 256MB, would it even be worth the upgrade? Thanks for any advice.

I personally would stick with what you have unless you can find a GTX as mentioned. The FX1600 is pretty much in the same class as the 7900GS with less memory.

You're probably right, if my 7900GS was 256MB then I'd definately upgrade it. I didn't actually realise they made 512MB 7900GS for the m1710, but it definately reads 512MB in the BIOS. The other reason I wanted a FX1600M is I think it'd support Windows 7 better, I have had a few issues with the 7900 such as lagging when playing videos full screen and sometimes it lags when you input text quickly, a friend of mine who owned an Inspiron 9400 with a 7900GS had these same issues with Windows 7, I'd guess it's because the drivers provided by NVidia are for Vista (I have tried a selection laptopvideo2go drivers and these are even worse)Thanks.

Take a shot at our NBF Mobile Force Driver. I use it for all my 76xx GPU cards and been happy with it

cheers ...
