How to boost reception for wireless.

I visit and work in a lab quite often which is close to, but seems to be insulated from university wireless and a nearby router most likely because of the bunker like concrete and steel reinforcement construction. We desperately need to use our laptops in there and I'm wondering if anyone has overcome similar problems with something like an usb connection for our laptops connected to a cord and an antenna which could be placed near the ceiling where it might "look" over the concrete walls or maybe near or out a window. Any suggestions would be helpful.

You can try that - an USB or PCMCIA wireless adapter that comes with an exchangeable antenna. There are after market antennas (with a long cable) that would do the job. Search for Super Cantenna (antenna with a can)

I saw that somewhere, but thought it might be like magnets for back pain. Is that for real? Anyone try that? A can around an antenna?

I did not make one, but I got one specially made from a bloke around here and hook that antenna to my router. Works well so far.

Alternatively get the IT department to wire in a wireless access point...

Or buy a router using lab funds and plug it into the university ethernet and just set up your own wireless network within the lab.

I read somewhere a few days ago that universities are doing away with Ethernet internet - too expensive to lay cables
