I just bought the abouve model a week ago (August 5, 2010). When I use google talk to call my friends, the ringing tone is so terribly soft even though I had set the volume of the speakers maximum. When there is an incoming message for me I could hardly hear the dong sound. When I play video clips, again I have to set the volume to maximum. If I set the volume to middle the sound can hardly be heard. Is this the kind of product we expected from Acer? I had raised the problem with the engineer of Acer Headquarter in Malaysia, he said this is the specification the model provides. OMG, I told him I am not talking about the sound quality, I am just talking about the sound output! Please give me the sound even if the quality may not beat other brands. FYI this model is running on i5 processor, how can one regards this model as a low end product?! Should anyone wants to buy a notebook please think carefully whether to buy Acer or not.

I would go back and see if there is any sound driver updates. You might also want to plug in an external speaker and see if there is a difference in loudness.

obviously with an external speaker it helps. but what is the point of having built in speaker. It is the whole idea of mobile connectivity. Anyway thanks for the good suggestion.

Built-in speakers for notebooks are an oxymoron ding, telling you the truth. Without the help of a headset or external speakers they are nothing. A few models of Toshiba, HP and ASUS do have good sounds and loudness that I came across.

I would still want to look into updating the sound driver. Go to the device manufacturer site and pull it down from there.

Oh, is it? No wonder my old HP gave me very large sound. I hope you could help me to find a good driver which is good not only for google talk sound but also for music and video sound. Thanks

They don't show Windows 7 but you can use the Vista ones - It states so in the change log.

Create a restore point first before installing new driver.

I have a acer aspire 7740 series and it has some serious sound out put, movies, music, pretty much everything is pretty loud.theirs some setting you can play with that add some more output to the speakers, try playing around with them.
Compared to a compaq presario i haD before these speakers blow them away..................

That's always the trick. Hit and miss on notebook models. That is why I always suggest that get one's hand on the machine before buying - regardless of reviews reading.

I have an aspire 5741 and the system sounds (Windows event related sounds) are nonexistent with the built in speakers, if I set the volume to maximum and keep clicking the adjuster to hear the 'ding' sound it fluctuates from nothing to a little 'ding' and everything between.

The problem doesn't appear to be drivers related as DVD's play fine and the sounds are fine when ear buds are used, it seems to be related to the speakers alone.

I also have a Toshiba Satellite P188 and the sound is as bad, or worse than the Aspire, with it, system sounds can barely be heard even using ear buds.

Sound, or lack of it would seem to be an issue with quite a lot of notebooks.

Just for everybody's information, at last the senior engineer of Acer Malaysia admits the sound output of the model Aspire 4741G-5452G50MN is not to the mark. He has informed Acer Taiwan about this and hopefully they will send a new batch of better quality speakers. He has promised to replace the speakers for me as soon as he has tested the new batch of speakers and find that they are really up to the mark.

But I asked, what if the new batch of speakers are also the same? Then he dare not promised, just hope for the best. Anyway anybody looking for a notebook with good sound output should think again whether to buy this model.

Get yourself some good external speakers or a good headset. Poor audio quality is on almost all notebooks regardless of brands/models.

It's true that audio source contributes to the quality as well, along with audio drivers and media software - but users should not have to always to rely on them.

I would never consider audio quality as requirement when buying a notebook
