D-620 hard drive keeps cycling

The HD on one of our Dell D-620s keeps cycling from a low running speed to a high one. It never goes up to full speed, just up and down, constantly, about 5 seconds up and five seconds down. I can do a cold reboot and it goes right back into this process. It does it all the time that it's powered up.

Any ideas?

Sounds like the drive is failing

you maybe able to goto the manufacter's website and download a drive fitness test to verify.

But if you can still boot up - back up your files now.

Now it is just running steady all the time.

I changed around the power settings and now it no longer cycles, but it is running at a low speed constantly I have another identical D-620 in the office and I never hear the HD unless I'm reading/writing to it, but this other one just never stops spinning.

Still think it's going away? It is a nearly new 250GB WD drive and it started doing the cycling thing almost immediately.

Is that drive the same as you have in the office? I tend to agree with Dave about a failing hard drive, new or not.

Thanks, guys!

I backed it up, so now it can die. If I get around to it before it dies, I'll replace it, perhaps with the smaller one I took out!

could be a power supply issue as well.
