Gateway P 78 Series upgrade to Win 7

Hi, due to problems with Vista 64 biti am going to upgrade to Win7 -64bit. My questions are (a). Is there anything specific to the P78 Series notebooks that i need to know, (b). I will put the Win 7 on it's own harddrive and leave my data on a separate drive, any problem?.(c). Should i update the Bios before i install Win7 or wait until Win 7 is installed?.(d). Is there a application/program i can run to tell me specifically which drivers/software is the most current for my system. (e). Last but not least my P 7801u FX has the key to turn on Bluetooth, but looking at the specs this particular model it seems doens't have Blue tooth, is this correct or do i need to do something to enable it. ?? Thanks,
BD.

If your comp has bluetooth it can be turned on when the wireless switch is on, then you must press F6 to turn it on.

When you said upgrade, are you installing W7 on top of Vista or wiping it out clean? I recommend the upgrade "over" the current OS. Gateway support Site should have all drivers you need for Windows 7.

And unless you have an issue somewhere, I would not recommend updating BIOS.

Hi, I am thinking of wiping it clean as long as it doesn't affect my other drive with the data, but i am not sure which would be the best option.

Unless there is a need to wipe the system clean, upgrading over current OS works best for me; keeping data and apps intact and less headache in chasing down drivers.

Plus, it will leave the restore partition alone in case you ever want to go back to Vista....have you made your recovery disks in Vista whenyou got the machine

Hi, Yes i made my recovery disks for Vista when the system was new...I don't think I will want to go back to Vista but to save possible headaches getting drivers etc. I will probably just do the upgrade vice clean install. Thanks to all for the help. Regards, BD

Well, well, well, i thought i was finished with this subject!!
I just checked the Win 7 disk my son got for me and it's Win 7 Pro. The compatibility report from microsoft says that i can only upgrade to Win 7 home premium or Ultimate, but not Pro. My question is can i upgrade to Pro, and if not why not???? Regards, BD...

Hi, I ran the compatibility program already, and it said that i could upgrade from Windows Vista home premium to..... Win 7 either home premium or ultimate. I find this interesting as PRO is right in between both those. I did some further research and found that apparently!! I have to do a clean install vice an upgrade. I have my data on another drive so I will just install on the separate drive and then search for drivers. UNLESS, someone here has a better idea. Regards, BD

Search the net for it - "in-place upgrade of Windows 7 Home Premium to Windows 7 Professional". There are tricks and tips as how to go about it, mostly involving some register entries tweaking. Back up your system first just in case.
