ASUS X83Vb Cracked Screen replacement help

Hi all,

The LCD screen on my X83 cracked, and I was able to find a replacement on eBay. There are a few things that worry me.
One, I did a Google search for a replacement screen, and I came up with an AU Optronics B141EW05 model number and manufacturer. I placed the order on eBay last night. Today, digging a little bit more, I find a different manufacturer/part number. This time I come up with 18G241406H14Q by LG. Are they the same part? Will the AU fit? They're both 14.1" LED backlit glossy 1280 x 800 screens.
Now, even if I did get the right screen, I have a problem. I tried to disassemble the laptop last night. Now, I havevtaken apart many laptops, Compaq, hundreds of Latitudes, IBM/Lenovos. and never had a problem. Well, the ASUS is different. I think I found all the screws, but the top and bottom of the base would not come apart. I can't find a manual anywhere online, which is hard to believe. I have always been able to find the service manual for every laptop I've ever had to work on.
I bought the X83 second hand off of eBay, and at first I loved it. Now, however, I am really starting to regret not buying the Latitude D620 I saw. The reason I went with the ASUS is the 512MB video card over the 256MB video card on the Dell, but now it doesn't seem so worth it. I still have my D610s that are six and seven years old, and I have had fewer problems with them over the past seven years than I have with the ASUS in the past four months.
Somebody, anybody, please help!

Thanks

Keyboard has not been removed. Dumb question, but how do I get the keyboard off. I need to replace it anyway, since when I bought the laptop it was missing two keys. I know that with my Dells and Lenovo I can pop off the bezel cover by the screen with a flat head screwdriver and then remove the two screws holding the keyboard down. is is the same with the ASUS? I tried popping off the chrome plastic bezel, but all I did was scratch the plastic and I was afraid to force it.
Thanks for the reply

Look above the F keys, there must be some latches that you pop out and lift the keyboard up. Make sure that the screws at the bottom case have been removed since 1 or 2 of them might hold the keyboard from below.

I've checked above the F keys, and I can't seem to find anything. It almost looks like the bezel is actually attached to the top part of the chassis. I managed to get a very small flat head between the keyboard and the bezel, but the whole top raises up. I also checked under the RAM, video card, wireless card, etc.. for any other screws, and I can't seem to locate any others. I've attached a picture of the bezel, so maybe if you're familiar with the laptop you can help me find where to look.
I have never been so frustrated with any laptop. Ever.
It was fun getting Windows 7 to work on it (the DVD kept disappearing, I had to re-load Vista and upgrade the firmware), I had a hell of a time finding all the drivers, and none of them were available on the ASUS site, it was a nightmare. I finally got it running, the hard drive died (not the original drive, a 500GB replacement) so I bought another 500GB, got that working, and now this. In three months, I think I might have enjoyed the laptop two weeks.
Thanks again.

Can you give us a shot with the whole top? Not just the keyboard part. Best things are a shot of the bezel part itself and then the whole keyboard area.

Sorry about the horrid pictures, but I'm still at work and my only camera is my phone. Problem is, when I get home, I have a camera, but no laptop to log on, and here at work, I have all the PCs I need, but no camera :/

There must be 3 latches at the top of the keyboard. One by the ESC key, one in the middle between F8 and F9 and one at the far right. Use a slotted screw driver or a pair of tweezers. The it can be lifted up. Be careful with the ribbon cable underneath.

I've been fighting this same issue with getting the keyboard off.

There are four latches at the top, Above F2, between F5 & F6, F10, and INS keys.
Problem is that the two screws that hold on the keyboard from underneath, are screwed into the keyboard standoffs, which are slotted and held to the backplane via a sloted hole. This is only on the left side though. The right standoff is slotted, but no slotted hole exists on the backplane.

That said, the keyboard is still not too easy to remove it you just release the latches on top. Since I was going thru the entire system, I found that if I pressed on the bottom of the keyboard from the underside, thru the hole just to the rear of the CPU (once you remove the heat sink and pipes), it was easy to work the keyboard free from the latches from the right to the left, then slide the keyboard towards the back of the case and viola, keyboard is FINALLY released.

Never seen one like this. Most keyboard pop out when you release the latches. Had me scratching my head for a little bit.

Hope this helps. Will try to post images to help.

Randy

Thank you both SO much for the replies. I found all of the latches, but I still have no idea how to take the keyboard/lcd off. What do I do with the latches? I tried a flathead screwdriver, nothing, I looked for any additional screws on the underside of the laptop, I've even removed the GPU and heatsink. Nothing. I feel like such an idiot, but seriously, this is crazy!

Your welcome. Glad I could be of assistance. I'm usually on the reading end of the forums, so it feels good to be able to help someone else.

Funny thing is I was struggling with the same problem when I found this thread, so when I figured it out, I had to help others.

My problem was that I was trying to remove the chrome bezel, which we now all know is part of the plastic tray. Once you showed me how to push the keyboard out, it was a piece of cake.
Now I just need to wait for my new LCD and keyboard to arrive, and get some arctic silver for the heat sinks.
I can honestly say, after taking apart laptops from just about every major manufacturer, ASUS is the worst. But, now that I know how to do it, I like my laptop again

I started with the same premise. After it didn't seem to be moving, I went the drastic route, pull all the screws and see how it all fits together.

I'm also good fixing a car engine thru the muffler!!

Of course, after all the bonding sessions you and your notebook had together

I have replaced both the keyboard and the screen on my laptop, and I want to thank you guys a lot for helping with disassembling the laptop.
Now it's time to start upgrading the laptop, faster CPU, better video card, maybe even more RAM when it becomes cheaper...
Hmmm... 16GB of RAM anyone ( I could probably buy a new laptop for less than the RAM...)
