Hard driver or mother board or else?

my old sony pcg-tr3a, XP, begins to start and fails, no disk or something like that, prompts F1 to resume or F2 I go into set up, which never works and after many tries starts up and works fine. Lately howeve, I've discovered that if I leave it on with the error mesage until it warms up, it will normally then start an works fine.

I've been able to salvage parts first making two VAIOs out of three and now looks like I may need to make one out of what's left.

The second one, just doesn't start any more, seems to begin then leaves a black screen, maybe a beep.

So I'm trying to figure out which parts to take out of which one to try putting in the other. Any ideas or recognize any symptoms?

Thanks

You're probably right. I just am really curious about the symptom of it starting, after being warmed through a long wait leaving the "Failure Fixed Disk 0" error message, and then working fine for many hours of use. If it's as simple as a connection or something, I'd really like to retain this hd with the version of xp pro it has.

How about booting up from an installation disk and choose repair option? If the disk can see the drive you might have a change to salvage the data or make a clone out of it to a healthier drive

I can get the hd running and even use the computer for hours and I've saved my work on an external. But I'm totally not knowledgeble on how to clone the hd. Seems when I've tried using a install disk before (my first pcg tr3 quit and I purchased a MS Home install disk from MS or Sony), it asks me for numbers and they specific to specific laptops. I've since exchanged parts between 3 original laptops and now when I try to do something like update the windows packages, they tell me my win software is not genuine, but it is, it came with the computer new when I bought them and the people I bought the VAIOs from.

How do I take one of the HDs, or a new one, and put the windows professional on it from this laptop hd? Like I say, I can get it running fine, it only needs to warm up physically, then works fine.

Easus Backup - free, will allow you to clone the hard drive. All you need is an external USB housing for the new drive. Afterward, just swap out the drive.
