I'm confused in this sea of laptops :(

What's up laptop gurus, I came here after a laptop pilgrimage of a few weeks and now need your guidance! I've been looking for a good study laptop for my university daily routines. I usually use the computer to process some light to medium tasks (compiling biological data, etc), go on the internet, watch some videos, nothing really extraordinary but not too light either.

I've had some bad experiences with acer so I think they're out of the picture here. Also, a number pad on the keypad area would be super cool, although not necessary, it would certainly be a plus. I'll answer the "questions" so you guys can have a good view of what I need. I really appreciate the help guys ^_^.

***I summarised my criterias at the end if you don't wanna read all this junk :P.***

1) What is your budget?

800-1000$

2) What size notebook would you prefer?
15'' to 16''

3) Where will you buying this notebook?

Online or at a store, I don't care. I'm in canada btw.

4) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?

Certainly not except acer or macs.

5) Would you consider laptops that are refurbished/redistributed?

I can consider refurbished but new would be better.

6) What are the primary tasks will you be performing with this notebook?

University data processing and chart creation. Video watching, maybe some light editing and gaming.

7) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places, leaving it on your desk or both?

I will be moving a lot with it. Lets say, 50% in my dorm and 50% out.

8) Will you be playing games on your notebook?

Light gaming, an optimus (switchable) video card will be cool.

9) How many hours of battery life do you need?

The battery life is not really important... 4-6 hours unplugged maybe? More than my last laptop that lasted 30-60 minutes and than just shut down .

10) Would you prefer to see the notebooks you're considering before purchasing it or buying a notebook on-line without seeing it is OK?

I don't have to see it as long as it fits my needs, but seriously, every laptop can be seen on the internet.

11) What OS do you prefer? Windows (XP or Vista or Windows 7), Mac OS, Linux, etc.

Windows 7 or vista.

12) What screen resolution(s) would you prefer?

I dont have any clue you tell me

13) Do you want a glossy/reflective screen or a matte/non-glossy screen?

They are not an issue for me as long as the screen is perhaps native hd or close to it.

14) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you?

I'm not in a manequin parade and the laptop is not an acessory to me. So heck with the style, I don't give a rat's ass about it .

15) When are you buying this laptop?

In the next few days, before end of August/2010.

16) How long do you want this laptop to last?

At least 2-3 years

17) How much hard drive space do you need; 80GB to 640GB? Do you want a SSD drive?

500gb, could do with 320gb. Solid state drives are kinda costy these days so I prefer to pay more for the other hardware instead.

18) Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a CDRW/DVD-ROM, DVD Burner or Blu-Ray drive?

I'd like to be able to watch DVD's on the computer and to burn them. I don't need the blu-day, waste of money for me.

To summarise, I want a
- 15''-16'' laptop
- A good processor maybe I-3 or a dual core
- **IT WON'T RUN HOT, and I can use it on my lap**
- 3-4 gb of ram (DDR2 or DDR3)
- 320 - 500 Gb of hard state drive (5400 rpm being the standard I think)
- Light 4 lb to 6 lb
- Either intergrated graphics or A switchable gpu (Nvidia) Can also be a low ati one that doesn't heat much or not at all
- Design is not an issue but a slim one could be very nice
- Exclude Acer and Mac from the list. The rest of the companies are fine with me.
- Price range 800$-1000$

that's it! Thanks a LOT guys!!

Cool I like it, but I find it kind of rare to find... =/. Anything else you have up your sleves ghn? Something a little bit less powerful...i-5 maybe? Cause this N61 is way too much for me I think . It will process my data at a blazing speed but... i-5 will do the job I think and also I don't really plan to play with it so the gpu will be used for videos more than anything. One thing is for sure, I really like the N61 slim look :P.

For the price the Asus is a good performer, you can also take a look at the Sony E Series, might be more to your liking

Solid and tough choices. Go to a store and put your hand on them, give them a last test so we say.

Hey guys, its me again...

I haven"t made my choice yet but there has been a change of plans. I"m now looking for a solid 14"-15" laptop, light, durable with a good quality screen (HD if possible, 720P-1080P). It want a good processor also. I would prefer a 14" laptop as I know that they are more portable than 15", but I am open to both. Forget Apple, I just hate the OS, but acer and everything else goes .
Btw, forget about the gaming and photo editing. It will be for studies and videos only... but I wanna do both extremely well with high quality stuff. Budget stays the same 800-1000$ I could probably go over if it"s REALLY worth it ^_^. Also, I went to a few store to test the systems I listed, I couldn"t see the N61 or the Vostro, but I used the sony and I liked the keyboard layout which resembles the Apple keyboard... just wanted to add that just in case anyone is curious :P.

I"m counting on you, almighty gurus

** sorry for the " btw I just can"t do the normal ones for some reason**

Stay with a Sony then, the EA series sports a 14" (good) screen)

cheers ...
