Acer Aspire 5622 notebook not booting

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help me? I have a 3 year old Acer Aspire 5622WLMi laptop running windows xp home edition with a partitioned hard drive. I switched it on today and it went to the usual acer boot screen which includes the F2 option for the setup screen, but after this it then just goes to a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top left corner, and nothing else. I downloaded and made a boot disk using software called "boot disk" and told setup to boot from the cd rom drive, and also tried booting from an external usb cd rom drive but nothing so far has worked. I cant seem to find the option to start windows in safe mode either. The system has never had any boot problems before. If anyone has any ideas on how to help then please let me know, thanks!

Try this - create a LiveCD and try boot from that.

Always worth a try... Download Ubuntu and burn the ISO to disc (just click on the ISO and choose a burning program to open and burn it, I use Nero).. Run it a s a live CD or DVD and use the disc management software (usually Gparted) to check the hard drive out....
