Convert laptop screen and KB/Mouse to work for desktop?

Hi all,

I have an old Dell M70 which has a graphics card problem. I since bought a new laptop, Dell XPS M1530 to replace it.

However recently I was wondering about the possibility of using the still good WUXGA(1900x1200) screen of the M70 on a DVI Connection, and I've kind of went down the rabbit hole.

From what I see this isn't an easy task, so I wondered if anyone had any experience in this field, using LCD Scaler boards, or if anyone knows of a way to convert DVI to LVDS so that I could plug it in.

I'm aware of a few issues surrounding this, such as actually powering the screen, but I can't even seem to find the first step which would be the converter or adapter available anywhere except from huge OEMs who'd be looking to supply 50+.

The dream would be to have a cable coming out of the M70 Shell, which had DVI and USB connections for the screen and kyeboard/touchpad. That way I could hook it into a desktop machine maybe hidden away, have the space saving of the laptop (granted not the mobility) and the convinience of modular upgrading.

Basically the M1530 is now showing it's age and I'm loathed to buy yet another laptop just to get the latest hardware, but don't have room for a full desktop setup as normal.

Would appreciate any help.

Many thanks.

There are tips and hints on the net about converting notebook LCD into usable external display. I have read many in the past and it boils down to using conversion kit (material) that would run into $200 (and above), which in many cases making it not worth the investment.

But you sure can make some good bucks of selling the screen to other notebook owners though.

cheers ...

I appreciate the reply, yeah that's kind of what I had found, a very manual process costing quite a bit more than it's worth.

I'd seen a converter board costing about $250 so you're in the right ball park, just wondered if someone had the magic answer.

Thank you anyway
