I went to turn it on today and powers up for couple seconds then shuts off...any idea what problem might be?

How far along does it get in its boot cycle...does anything ever appear on the screen...has it been shaken or bumped around recently, you could try making sure the memory modules are seated correctly as well as the hard drive....if its only a couple of seconds and not minutes, then its too early to be a heat issue

not long, lights turn on and i can hear dvd rom but nothing on screen and then just turns off....I will check memory to see if that does anything.

Check the hard drive too to make sure it is seated properly

My 7805u does the same thing...it started after I installed some new patches from Microcrap...reboot and VOILA...blank screen and no bios screen. It also rebooted spontaneously after a couple of seconds on battery power. I rebooted again with the ac adaper plugged in and it stayed running after another reboot, but never started the bios. There are no beeps or anything. I reseated the video cable and put new thermal paste on the CPU in addition to blowing dust out of the cooler. Still nothing. I removed all of the drives and the memory and swapped the memory around. etc...still nothing. Any ideas?

I meant to say that is shut down, not rebooted spontaneously...failure to proof read.

New patches??? are we talking MS updates??? No BIOS updates because a wrong one could do that..
