m17x dies when unplugged?

So here's the problem. M17x purchased in december 09. Did a factory restore last night. Now whenever the ac adapter is unplugged computer immediately dies. Battery is enabled and showing full charge. 5 leds light up on battery. Upgraded to newest bios version. Tried restoring again think maybe something went wrong with the process. Still no cure for it at all. Anyone have any ideas?

Try with another battery first, just to be sure.

yea planning on picking one up next week, just wondering if anyone on here had experienced the same problems and maybe it was a setting i was missing or something simple so i didnt have to spend 150 on a new battery.

try a reset

Unplug the laptop

remove the battery

Hold the power button down for 20 -30 seconds

put the battery back in, plug in the ac and power up

Boot into the BIOS and make sure the ac adaptor and battery are identified

Boot into windows and tell us what Windows reports for the battery status

then try booting up on battery

Tried that with the alienware tech.
I had it working last night for a little bit.
Switched to the discrete graffics settings and it seemed to do the trick i could unplug the adapter without it shutting off. Ran the battery down to about 75%, then shut down and tried to boot from just battery. And yet again nothing happened. Also when i powered it back on with the adapter and tried unplugging it again while already running it dies. So it seems like i can get it to work but when it reboots it resets some setting and wont recognize the browser again.

Really starting to get sick of this thing, ready to go back to my Vaio Signature F because at least that thing worked the right way.

you shuold be able to get about 60 min running on the GPUs and 2 2.5 hours on the 9400 if you have a R1

But you should be able to get a new battery under warranty since it has not been a year yet

The battery runs fine when it works when i got it working last night it took about 20 minutes to drop down to 75 percent so i know the battery its self is fine.

Maybe a loost connection? will pick up some more electrical tape on my way home and see if making it snug will make a difference.

my main thing is this didnt start happening untill after i restored to factory with fresh windows install.

Ill update with how making it fit more snugly works out any other ideas that havent been covered yet are more than welcome.

thanks

Thanks for the help. Put some tape on the battery to make it fit tighter and it now works perfectly.

As an additional note, have you tried cleaning the contacts on both the battery and the computer? Sometimes they get dirty and end in a bad connection causing problems.

The conections look brand new. The battery hasnt been removed since i purchased it, i dont know why all of the sudden it decided to come loose. Its working perfectly now just goes to show when in doubt use tape.

well either way I think you have a warranty isssue here

If you are still under warranty i think you may need either a new battery or new motherboard.

The tape fix is temporary

Yea, i know i need a new battery the battery itself is perfect, holds a steady charge and the battery life hasnt gone down. so i dont think ill buy a new one untill it starts going. the tape fix while temporary does work and hasent had any issues tested it out by moving it around even shook it a little bit just to see how ssturdy it was.

I dont think its the motherboard because the it recognizes the battery and on boot it switches to integrated graffics, so im pretty sure its working fine.

well I mentioned mother oard becuae its the other half of the contact problem, and the area where it is most prone to damage.

either way Dell covers the battery under the 1st year of warranty only, the motherboard will eb coverd under the base warranty.

So you have until Dec 2010 but I would call now and get it started
