Aspire 7520 DVD rom problem

OK here is the symptoms. It just started one day.

1. It will not open when i push the button. Not even the light blinks.

2. If i open it the other way (Paper clip in hole) and put a cd or dvd in it doesn't do a thing. No spin and no light.

3. If i uninstall it, and reboot, it sees it and installs drivers for it. Also it sees it in bios.

Is it now a useless piece of plastic or can it be something else? hate to buy a new one and this one be another problem. Suggestions?

Try remove the drive and re-seat it first.

I did that, and cleaned the terminals.

Well, short from taking the drive out and see if it works with an USB external housing or within another comp, I would say that the DVD rom is wasted. Hopefully, since it is still much cheaper than other issues with the mainboard/controller.
