p7805u gpu woes

Hello All,

Well i have been searching for solutions all day long and found one that worked moderately well but killed my notebooks performance. I figured i would join up here and look to you all for a little bit of guidance and kindness.

To keep this brief ill just state the facts from here on out. using RealTemp to monitor my cpu and gpu temps and when playing dragon age with powermizer set to max performance i hit 105 degrees C in less than 5 minutes and my framerate becomes rubbish. Now i know something is up because i used to play this game on higher settings for way longer with no graphical inconsistencies save for minor slowdown when in large outdoor areas (i.e. Ostagar). If i put powermizer to medium performance setting then i maintain 70-80 degrees C when playing for any length of time but obviously im not pleased with the framerate and such. I was wondering if its safe to use rivatuner on my GeForce 9800M GTS 1GB or if i should stay away from that program altogether as it warns about notebook support. Im desperate and will be checking back frequently for any information anyone can provide. Thank you in advance and please be well.

I would try with applying better thermal paste to GPU and CPU and using an external notebook cooler.

Rivatuner works for some, not for others - just give it a shot.

Also try playing with a smaller resolution would improve the fps.

You say, " i know something is up because i used to play this game on higher settings for way longer with no graphical inconsistencies."

This indicates that something has changed. Very possibly, and I have experienced this a few times myself. There is a build-up of dust inside your laptop. Most likely on the heat sync(s) or just in general.

Having the laptop air-dusted out has solved the same problem for myself and others several times.

Good luck.

Thanks for the advice guys. I had a feeling that it would be something along the lines of needing to apply a thermal compound or have the insides of my computer dusted. I purchased a 2 year geek squad service plan through Best Buy the day i got the computer and have already used it once to replace a faulty HD so i'll be bringing it to them as soon as i get my HD backed up with my brothers external. I already called and spoke to someone about bringing it in and they said they could clean it and stress test it to see the overheating problems and if its a hardware issue send it out for repair. I have one other question that im hoping either of you can answer. I downloaded a lot of software while trying to solve this problem on my own including; powermizer manager, rivatuner, furmark, realtemp, and nibitor though, i did not install nibitor out of fear of messing with any bios settings. So my question is should i remove some of these programs because they will void my warranty through best buy or through best buy my coverage with gateway? Again i thank you for the replies. As always Be Well.

You can remove them if you want - it will be hard for anyone to blame software for hardware failure.
