4720Z Charging Problems

Thread Starter
My sister dropped the laptop (slid off her lap while on couch, 2' fall) & it broke the charging plug. I ordered a new plug & soldered it in. The plastic ring that keeps the adapter plug from moving too much was damaged in the fall as well, so play was possible but there wasn't any at the time. Eventually, from the constant moving of the laptop while plugged in, the new power port came loose & shorted out. At this point the laptop wouldn't boot in any configuration. I ordered a new power board to replace the obviously crispy original board. I also ordered a replacement base to do away with the broken retainer. Laptop seemed to work fine. I then noticed that it always says 84% & charging on the battery life even if it has been shut down for 24 hrs & left charging. If I unplug the power it dies. If I remove the battery it continues to run & states that no battery can be found. I can also swap chargers with my 4620z and it works so the charger is not at fault. With the laptop off & charging the charger does not heat up. Only when the laptop is on does the charger heat up which leads me to believe that the laptop is not actively charging the battery while it is off.
((Here are the voltages I am currently getting from the JP1 pins.. (1) Ground, (2) 0V, (3) 2.69V, (4) 2.69V, (5) 2.92, (6) 0.07, (7) 0.07. I may have 1 & 7 reversed as I do not have the laptop apart to read the motherboard))

1: Does anyone know the voltages that should be coming out of the charging pins (JP1 - 7 pins) so that I can test?

2: Could the replacement power board be faulty?

3: Could the battery be faulty?

4: Besides the power board, are there charging components on the motherboard that could have gone bad during the short? If so, what should I look for & where should I look?

Hopefully I have given enough information about the problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I would go with 3) - battery is failing or already failed. Replace it first.

cheers ...
