Yep - short of blasting it there is no other real way for normal users like myself to wipe out the data on any drives

Just to be sure to leave the drive caddy (if any) for the next user

Use it for back up

Drive caddy = some notebooks require the hard drive to be installed in a removal bay (frame) before snapping into the slot.

both HDDs linked by eSata, maybe?

Not quite sure what you mean by "linked" but you can use it via USB (or eSATA port) as a backup device or external data storage.
