Acer Aspire 5471-A keeps freezing

Thread Starter
as the title suggests, i am having problems with my new Acer Aspire notepad laptop.
I receive it on saturday, and it has crashed and frozen quite a few times since then with only medium usage. i'm pretty sure it isnt a case of the notepad over-heating as it does not feel exceedingly hot for it to cause the freeze.

It leaves no error message or anything, it just completely locks up and the only thing i can do is to reboot it by holding down the power switch until it turns off.

Has anybody else encountered this problem, and if so, have anything to suggest how to fix this problem

Thanks in advance

Is there anything in particular you are doing/playing when the freezing happens...What new programs if any have you installed...What antivirus came with the machine and are you using the trial version or something else...Just in case..you cant have two antivirus programs running at the same time. One must be completely uninstalled by using the manufacturers uninstall program

it tends to happen when im randomly browsing the internet or i am idle or whatever.
it hasnt yet fully frozen when i have been in games or whatever (WoW in this case), so it is most perculiar.
Any suggestions?

it came with mcafee but i uninstalled it and using avg atm.

Did you use the McAfee uninstall tool...if not, there are still remnants on there which could cause your laptop to freeze...let us know...There have been people with problems using AVG version 8...If this is the version you are using, might I suggest using the uninstall tool for McAfee, uninstalling AVG and installing and updating Avast Free...Are there any conflicts in your Control Panel> Device Manager (yellow or red exclaimation marks)

i dont think i did. btw also, it did freeze up before i installed AVG and stuff - ive done a system restore to the day i got it, going to see if this helps it at any point...if not im going to restore to factory settings and reinstall the drivers/applications via the acer eRecovery management tool.

i also dont see any conflict things via the way you suggested.
Thanks again, and thanks in advance.

Watch what "stuff" you install and make sure that it is compatible with your OS..If you are going back to factory settings, I would suggest going to the McAfee home site getting the approprite tool and uninstall it that way then download and install Avast free rather than AVG..Is your OS 64Bit or 32bit...Most programs designed for 32 bit will not work on a 64bit system and vice versa

the stuff i installed was just skype, itunes and WoW really, but yeah i shall do - only took notice of the 64bit thing with itunes.

I did the system restore and reloaded everything...interestingly, Acer started to install loadsa stuff after load-up which it failed to the first time around, so im thinking that it just hadnt installed all the drivers/applications which its meant to first time around, so it just kept freezing because of them - its been successfully going for ~90 mins without any hassle yet at all!

I removed McAfee with the McAfee uninstaller thing and it all seems to be going swimmingly thus far!
(also installed Avaste as you suggested)

Ill post again in the morning to say how its progressing

Thanks very much for the help
