Yes one can question the heat on this system, where Asus chose a 45nm 4-core CPU (Intel® Core™ i7-720QM, 45w TDP, 1.6-2.8GHz, $364). Most other 13-14in laptops preferred 32nm 2-core (e.g. i7-620M, 35w, 2.66-3.33GHz, $332). Now Asus' choice may be wise: by lessening the freq, the TDP jumps only by 29%, and the current CPUs' thermal controls are way better now, so that 45w may translate into quite acceptable heat in real life. Whence the need for experience returns about this question.

Higher resolutions and MAXRAM please Asus

In addition I regret that Asus only put 1366×768 res on a 14in screen with such powerful CPU and GPU. This makes a wider pitch (227nm) than the one that despite my age (70) I appreciate daily on my Feb 2006 12.1in 1280×800 laptop (204nm). So I guess most younger people, no matter what they think or say before trying, would appreciate significantly higher resolutions, particularly with the more powerful engines and the more loaded pages and programs we have today.

BTW Asus doesn't take MAXRAM seriously enough. RAM sizes and prices have been progressing fast and steadily over the last 3 or 4 decades, and surely will as well for a couple more decades, so what is important is NOT the amount included at the moment of sale, but the MAX the user can install progressively in the next months and years as memory sticks improve in size and price. I could keep using my 1999 laptop (13.3in CLEVO 982) for 7 years because, in the era when the standard ram was 32MB, it had a MAXRAM of 256MB.

n82jq has NO Gbit, NO Blu-ray

In addition, by following the links on the 1st page of Google "n82jq specs", one will discover that this Notebook has only "Fast" Ethernet (100Mbps) and DL DVD (no Gigabit or Blu-ray). Cutting corners too much IMO for such a powerful body.

It does make up with USB3.0 port, non? It is not so much about cutting corners but to offer a good price performer without losing their own profit margin on just one specific model.

cheers ...

For me the 1366×768/14in resolution and the 100Mbps Ethernet are too low under the sweet spot. They are right though (IMO) on the rest, like excluding Blu-ray and SATA6 or including USB3, WiFi-n, etc.

Hmm, the screen does not have to be an issue if you are willing to experiment. Check out following link Dell Studio FHD (1600x900) 14" replacement LCD details.
Yep, that's a fine screen for only below $100. Look at amazon where N82JQ-A1 goes for $899 from Buy.com, throw in Seagate momentus XT, finally sell the pulled components and you may end up having exceptional performer below $1000...now, who's cutting corners here

Btw, have you guys noticed 8Cell New Genuine ASUS N82 Battery links all over Ebay. It states that it's a genuine piece and that it replaces Part Number A32-N82 A42-N82, which would be the original 6Cell pack.

Here's the link to one of the many auctions
It's only one cent shy of $60. If anybody decides to give this a try, please, post your battery life times here

Laptop screen can easily be changed

Thx "-LuckTR-" for your very useful info. I am keeping it safe for later reference (and adding a title to make your info more visible).

I noticed their very efficient tutorials (short and clear), e.g. their LCD Screen Installation 3:03 video and Determine your LCD screen model number page.

Edit Sun 26 Sep 2010 20:38 GMT: I found your post of Fri 03 Sep 2010 08:27 GMT, where you « found out that N81 (practically same display chassis as N82) has exactly same dimensions as Dell's STUDIO 14's 1600x900 screen » and explained.

$150 Rebate on N82JQ

Good news, everyone .

B&H is selling ASUS N82Jq-A1 for mere $827.22 after ASUS MIB of $150 as of today. MIB ends on 31st of October so if you are on the fence about this lappy, there have never been a better time to grab the bull by the horns .
