At the moment, I'm sporting a 320GB 5400rpm WD -- the one that shipped with my laptop. I'm running out of room and need to reinstall Windows anyway.
I thought I would get a new HDD and only reinstall Windows once. I went to newegg and looked at both 7200 and 5400 HDDs with 500GB, and am at a loss after reading the reviews especially of the 5400 rpm drives.
I thought I might save a little money, and keep the heat as low as possible by going the 5400 route. My M1530 is pretty hot even with the 5400 drive in it now, so I was afraid to introduce potentially more heat into the equation.
Surely one of you learned people has experience with this upgrade, and can advise about the heat issue.
If anyone has any advice to share about a particular model or brand of HDD, that would be welcome. I was thinking that Hitachi might be the way to go, but even though the overall rating on newegg for the Travelstar 5K500.B HTS545050B9A300 (0A57915) is 4 out of 5 eggs on 87 reviews, it seems like LOTS of the reviews mention dead drives. That spooked me...
So yeah, if you have recommendations, I would really appreciate your time.
David
