I have an issue with my HP nc8430 notebook.
A few weeks ago the battery no longer works. If it is plugged in, it works, if the battery is removed when plugged in, the notebook dies. Windows XP power options says "Battery not present".
This seems like a pretty cut and dry bad battery case, so I ordered a generic battery from eBay, and when the new battery arrived, I tried it and the same result. No good.
Then I thought, may be it needs to be an OEM battery, and not a generic one, so I ordered an OEM battery, when I had AC plugged in, inserted the battery, power options still says "Battery not present", shut down, restart, same problem.
However, I noticed the new OEM battery does behave a little bit differently. The bad OEM battery and the generic battery, when plugged into the notebook, yielded NO indication whatsoever on the power indicator light at the front of the notebook. But when the new OEM battery was plugged in, it turned green immediately, stayed green for 2 seconds, then it turned to a blinking yellow. If I leave it plugged in overnight, it will stay blinking yellow all night.
If I then turn the computer back in, check power options, it still says "Battery not present". However, if I pulled the power cord away from the notebook, it will continue to run, with the task bar in Windows still saying it is on "AC Power". So it is running on battery but Windows does not think so...how is that possible?
I thought may be it was the BIOS, so I updated the BIOS today, no change.
So now, I have a working battery in that it will charge and hold charge, but I have no way to know when it's fully charged or when it will run out, as Windows does not know it's there, and will not tell me anything about it.
This makes absolutely no sense to me.
Any ideas?
