Wondering how I open my Western Digital external hard drive on my Asus netbook. I try all options in file manager but still cannot read external drive. Thanks gh

Is the external drive brand new? You might need to format it. Right-click on "My Computer" and select "Manage". Then go into Disk Management. After it scans your drives, you can format the external drive and then it will be seen in Explorer.

Ah, my apologies. I'm assuming you have NTFS support in your distribution? Can you mount it via a disk utility?

The Asus does not have a disc drive, but does have the usb port which I use.

That's not what I meant. Okay, try it this way: go into your terminal and type lsusb to list out everything that's attached to USB devices. Then when you figure out which is your external drive (it should be fairly easy as a process of elimination), try and mount it using the description (for instance dev/sda1) so if your external was called dev/sda1 then you'd type in "mount dev/sda1"

Ok, you need to go through file manager to see the drive contents... With Xandros set desktop it won't mount in the normal Linux way.. You need to make sure the side panel view is present and you should see the drive there...

Some old and useful tips on the eee pc running linux...

These are some I have used in the past... Xandros is by far the best operating system for the eee pc, but it is limited and tips and hacks help... Ubuntu netbook remix is good and Puppeee is too, but not as user friendly (but it sits in RAM, soo the SSD drive is not used too often which does speed things up, that is the 900 though)... But I digress - the full desktop gives more of a windows like flavour and can be easier for some tasks....
