Acer 8930g HDMI Audio out, no sound

Thread Starter
I have an acer 8930g and recenlty upgraded my home tv to a samsung 50" plasma. My problem is that I can not get my laptop to produce sound on the TV. The video from the HDMI is fine just no sound. I have checked all the settings I can find. When audio is playing on the laptop with the HDMI out selected, all indication is that sound is being produced, but not getting to the TV.

The nvidia HD audio driver is 1.0.0.59. I dont seem to be able to find an updated driver anywhere, and have no clue as to where the driver file came from, as the only driver acer lists on its site is the HD driver for the realtek device. Selecting the realtec as the output device does nothing.

When the HDMI is connected the Nvidia HDMI out is selected by default, with the green checkmark in the sound manger in windows 7(64)

I have checked the HDMI cable, and it is in fine working condition. Any light someone can shed on this problem will be appreciated.

I am usually pretty sharp at figuring stuff like this out, but this one has me stumped

Do you see any options in the Playback Properties for Digital Output Devices?

cheers ...

Found this on another forum, see if it might be the solution to your problem:

I take it you are using your laptop to watch DVD etc on your HD TV. I had the same problem where the sound was coming out my laptop. I solved this by going in to the sound options on my computer (which you can access in your control panel) then set your sound default as HDMI. This should solve the problem, just remember to set the default back to the laptops speakers when you are finished using it on your TV.
I hope that helps.

My objective was/is to do things like watch Hulu or Netflix on my New Set. saugen48, thanks for the reply. I have set the HDMI to the default, with no help. I do not get any sound out of the laptop when the HDMI is set as the output device, The Windows 7 UV meter, if you can call it that, shows sound level operation, but there is no sound at the TV. I have tried it in all the HDMI ports on the TV. There is no option for the incoming sound from the HDMI in the TV options The new set is a Samsung PN50C550 50” plasma.

For the HDMI to even appear as a device option on the laptop it has to be hooked up, I have as far as I can tell tried every possible combination of settings, I don’t recall exactly what all the options were, other than the option to set it as default for sure. But this did not help.

I read someplace, not with this particular computer or setup, that the problem might be the HDMI audio Driver. I would update the driver if I could find out where to get it. Windows auto driver update is useless. It is an nvidia driver from all indications, but I don’t seem to be able to find it anywhere. It’s as if it is a ghost. Acer does not list it in the files for the computer on their web site. Like I said, the only HD audio driver listed is for realtek device, which corresponds to the cinereal player Not the HDMI audio out. This has become a quest now.

Something else to consider, only the newest of video cards are able to also carry sound and video via HDMI output....Found that on another forum

saugen48, you may be onto something with that. But how to find out, the specs at nvidia for the card are rather lacking, in fact the only specs for the 9600M GT are these :CUDA Cores32Graphics Clock (MHz)120 MHz
Feature Support:
NVIDIA PureVideo® Technology**HD HybridPower™ TechnologyyesCertified for Windows 7yes

it does not specificly say it supports HDMI audio out, but then again, it doesnt say it supports HDMI in any fashion, video or audio, so how can it be detemined?. A point to consider though, the driver direct from NVIDIA for the 9600M GT (laptop card) installs the HDMI AUDIO OUT Driver. This keeps getting stranger and more frustrating.
I followed the advice of those on the other forum you pointed to, and did the reboot stuff, but it didnt help.

Better than average chances, that's what it is....a per one of the other posts on that forum...is there a possibility of a parallel audio connection from pc to tv beside the hdmi cable...someone else on here may have a better idea (mousetrap)

That I think is my next avenue. I just got done doing the entire driver delete and reinstall thing, using the latest drivers from NVIDIA. Nothing more then a giant waste of time. The laptop does have support for S/PDIF from the realtek onboard, but it will have to wait............until I can find my patch cable, or have time to go buy another new one. Ill let you know how it turns out

Sometimes strange things happen. I swapped out the HDMI to a different port on the TV, nothing changed. Then I plugged in the SP/PDIF connection for the audio, and it worked, but not from the SP/PDIF connection, the sound is from the HDMI cable. GO FIGURE. I unplugged the SP/PDIF connection , sound still works, Turned everything off, rebooted, and it still works. I don’t have a clue what took place, some weird hand shake someplace that made it all happen.

Ok, I think I have a handle on it, although there is nothing in the TV documentation to support this. When I changed the port of the HDMI cable, I swapped it for the DVD that is hooked to it. The PN50C550 plasma 50" has 4 HDMI connection ports. And in that I think is the secret to all this. The ports are numbered 1-4 except in small print under the port numbered HDMI1,is this: (DVI) I did not see this until very close inspection. So it must mean that the HDMI1(DVI) is for Digital Video Input only. Really makes no sense because the DVD connected to it works fine, sound and video. But at any rate, with the laptop connected to HDMI2 it works fine. The procedure is to select the source on the TV first, then boot the computer into the HDMI2 port. If it is done any other way the computer does not recognize the HDMI Audio out connection, yet the video is fine. Sound quality is great. BTW don’t try to get any help from Acer, they are absolutely useless.

To sum up, this has been a communication problem between the PC and The TV, never a driver issue I am fairly certain. Although I did update to the latest NVIDIA driver downloaded from NVIDIA after I did a complete uninstall and clean with this driver sweeper from The Guru
