Something to contemplate at your next notebook purchases.

Compal lands ODM orders from Asustek for first time

Quote:
Compal Electronics has obtained orders for three million notebooks to be shipped in 2011 from Asustek Computer, the first time for the two companies to entering into ODM cooperation, according to industry sources in Taiwan.

Asustek aims to ship 10 million notebooks in 2011 and has decided on ODM partners in principle, the sources pointed out. Pegatron Technology, a maker spun off from Asustek, has landed 50% of the total shipment volume, followed by Quanta Computer with 25%, Compal with 15% and Foxconn (Hon Hai Precision Industry) with 10%, the sources indicated.

In addition to the new client Asustek, Compal has also obtained ODM orders for 2011 shipments from existing clients Acer, Dell, Lenovo, Hewlett-Packard and Toshiba, the sources noted.

Yup. As I recall from another article, all the K series and most of the N series are or will be outsourced to other ODMs. I don't consider Asus orders from Pegatron to be outsourced since Pegatron was an Asus spinoff. Just like I don't consider Acer's orders from Wistron to be outsourced for the same reason.

Will this change your opinion on Asus Rob?

It depends. The contractor still dictates the general parameters, specs, and price point to the ODM, so if Asus comes up with good designs and is willing to spend enough to ensure high quality standards in their branded notebooks, things ought to be okay. On the other hand, if the contracted ODMs don't have the same quality control standards as Asus does, then there could be a split in the lineup regarding build quality.
