Dell I-1520 - Seems to boot, but screen only glows

It's my oldest Son's laptop in my Siggy. He was practicing a racing simulator when the both the screen and the game froze. The screen changed and had a red tint (like a clear red lens over a camera), with a small square-like pattern. The game, which had the sound output of a porsche, was now repeating the same high-rev note. The screen blinked and he could not recover the game, so he attempted a reboot. The laptop was shut down, and when restart, the screen lit up, but nothing ever appeared.

I've reset memory Dimms, its been blown out, when turned on the screen glows but no words or anything shows up on it. I see no error messages (no beeps of blinking lights) so I think its booting up to the log in screen, but since we can't see anything its not doing us any good! LOL!

Does the nVidia 8600GT have a history of failing? Only thing I can think of at this point.

Any ideas?

Plug in an external monitor and see. If no change then the GPU is probably toasted.

cheers ...

It's a long shot, but try replacing the CMOS. I've seen this issue happen to me in the past and when I replaced the CMOS it booted/posted.

And if that doesn't work, give baking a try

CMOS? Where / What? (Did you mean the Battery perhaps?)

Note, its seems to be booting, like I said I can hear the HD humming, no error beeps or lights besides the normal ones.
