Not quite ready for the Geriatric Ward!

Hey everybody. I just wanted to drop in and and say hello to all of my Gateway and eMachines buddies.

For nostalga sake, I am posting this message from my eMachines M6811 that got its big screen debut right here in Notebook Forums where you all saw her naked while I was performing major surgery in order to resolve the infamous eMachines/Gateway overheating problem.

Well I am happy to say that both my eMachines m6811 and my Gateway 7422gX are running strong! and I mean strong. I have not had the overheating/shutdown problem on either of them for years and they are not yet ready for the Geriatric ward! . I will say that they do have their AARP cards by default.

The e-machines is running Ubuntu Lucid and the GW is still zipping along with XP-64. I am tempted to put W7 on it as my D810 is running just great with W7.

Yes, I do have some new blood one of which is a Elite 8530w which is a Beast! but I will post in the general forum for the Old Folks Home for Lappy's.

Thanks for checking in Eunix. How old are your machines?
Newer than my good old m6805 for sure 5 years at least. What do you say Conda?

And yes Eunix, go for Windows 7 (ultimate) 64bit - that is what I am running on this old M6805.

cheers ...

The 6811 should be around 6 years old based on the technology.

That is about right, maybe a little older. The GW has had a head replacement as I cracked the screen so the top covers say eMachines.

I may mod the cases to make them more modern and slick but believe it or not I have some older machines still in daily use back to PIII TP T23 Not worth selling on ebay as they are still good!

I think W7 would work better on this machine than it does on my D810 because it has the 64bit processor and the D810 is not but the D810 is really awesome still. I have 3 of them one running Server 2005 that I use as a test db machine for work.

I really can't justify buying a core i7 or Alienware Gaming machine with the mileage that I get out of my boxes.

Very true. And as you mentioned earlier, it is not so easy to part with these old notebooks that can still perform well in every aspect. As in gaming, I am inclining toward getting a PS3 machine just for the sole purpose of it, for new games.

Let me dig up my spare parts tomorrow - if I have them, if you can pay for postage, they are yours.

Yeah, I have a few machines that are older that are still functional and I have some that are not. The question is what to do with the older ones. Back in the day you could give your older stuff away but now, there is no point when someone can get a fresh netbook to do the job. I really would like to get a nice core i7 notebook like the HP dv8 (with my discount ) but I have not use for it so why spend the money. The basic applications that most people use do not require all of that processing power.

Now on the really old stuff, I have thrown puppy linux on them which is cool but I do still have copies of Win 95, NT4 WS and 2000 if neccessary.

We recycle old working ones in the family and between friends - then get them all back when they decide to go for new ones

Yeah, got copies of Win95, Win98, Win98SE and Win2000...With newer laptops just have the OS loaded on them and of course the restore disks that either came with them or that I have made...nobody is into older stuff now everyone wants new...a few years ago when the prices of laptops was substantially higher, i would buy older ones on EBay and clean them up and re-sell them to university students here in town...4 universities..they would go like hotcakes and 2-$300..now you can pretty much buy a brand new low level one for that price

No kidding there Gene. Selling old comps in parts is a better venture

Yeah but you have to hit the sweet spot for parting. Once a lappy gets too old, you can't even push the parts on the bay. For example, I have a GW solo 9550 that came in handy for a co-worker of mine who's machine went down and used it for a year because she was out of work and had a kid in college.

After that, I picked up some parts on the bay because I cracked the screen but the machine now runs puppy linux and I have the docking station and everything. I may turn it into a network sniffer but there is absolutely no market for parts for that old thing.

It serves me better doing utility work.

Agreed. I am still surprised as how many oldies out there that still look for parts. I had one IBM PS/2 (model 60) machine that was being sold as spare parts that fetched me more than $300. Still have another one that I use as a small printer server with a whopping 16MB Ram

Yes, Even MORE life left in this puppy! - I took the GW7422GX and lapped the an 80 Gig drive (from the 100G 7200rmp on that had XP on it) and Installed W7 Enterprise N on it.

I did a custom install becaue I didn't care about keeping the old programs and I have to say it runs much better than the RC version that I tried back in the day.

I did have to wrestle a bit with the ATI Radeon Catalyst driver and download a modem driver from Motorolla, but everything is running groovy.

I would dare say that it runs better thant the sister machine (M6811) running Ubuntu 10.x

Now if I can find a couple of new batteries on the ultra cheap, I may be able to mark these two machine fit for ye olde laptop bag and travel once again!

Right now they have limited travel and desk side duty!

Ha ha, I am going to rename my computer geriatric ward the Revitalization Ward. I love it when I have a little bit of time to tinker with my machines.

Since I have the N version I have to add the multimedia extensions and maybe the overclock tools but I don't really need them. I may open it up again to max the memory to 2Gig but the feel of the machine is as if was new again.

The only thing that I don't like about W7, the upgrade option are limited. I tried to install Enterpris N (64) on my Dual core opteron Sun Ultra20 M2 machine which has Vista Enterprise 64 on it but it would not do and I had to install a 3rd boot partition.

Cheers and happy tinkering everyone!

There is a registry tweak (2 actually) that would allow you to upgrade W7

I need to dig up the old M505X when I get back stateside. That was one heck of a machine as well.

just got the parts yesterday, Q, and ITS ALIVE!!

think im going to make it a terminal server for my Eee and run that as a thin client... im certain the 7422 can beat the pants off my Eee

although that will take a while because I have to steal back a hard drive... i had turned the drive from the machine into an external backup drive

It sure took a long way around to get to ya

I have no doubt about your 7422 will beat everything

cheers ...
