10" tablet in 2011, or not?

Samsung Electronics Co Ltd developed a 1.8mm-thick 10.1-inch LCD panel and showcased it at FPD International 2010/Green Device 2010, a trade show taking place in Chiba City, Japan.
...
Excluding its backlight unit, the panel is 0.44mm in thickness and 28g in weight. The thickness and weight of Samsung's existing LCD panel using a 0.5mm-thick glass substrate are 1.26mm and 130g, respectively (excluding a backlight unit).

The pixel count, brightness and contrast ratio of the panel are 1,024 x 600, 250cd/m2 and 1,000:1. It has a 50% color gamut on NTSC standards.

The company plans to commercialize the panel within two or three years.

Would this mean that the 10" Tablet might not really take flight until few years time and not in 2011 as anticipated?

After a 30min + of fiddling around, I would say no to this tablet. Don't get me wrong, it is the closest one to the iPad at the moment from a whole slew of other tablets within the store that I got my hands on.

- few hesitations between menu when there is no internet connection. Disabling the internet option improved the performance.
- the default font is a bit fancy and busy for a small screen
- eBook page turning is a bit sluggish at start, but once you get use to the way it reacts, then it is fine.
- the previous button does not always go back, but bring you back to main menu.
- Opera Mobile browser works well but watch out for youtube vids. They can at time just hang the ding, go back to the main menu is the best bet

Dual Core ARM CPU for Galaxy Tab 2GEN?

Would this be for real? Improvements in battery performance and cooler/faster running?

Quote:
Samsung Electronics is preparing its next generation tablet PC, Orion, using an ARM Cortex-A9-based processor and ARM Mali-400-based GPU.

The internal structure of the device was showcased at the ARM Technical Symposium 2010 in Taipei on November 18. The device's ARM Cortex-A9-based dual-core processor is manufactured on Samsung's 32nm lower-power consumption process, while the device is equipped with the quad-core Mali-400 for GPU.

However, Samsung has not yet announced the launch schedule of the new tablet PC.

Meanwhile, ARM also announced its Mali-T604 GPU, which the company claimed can achieve five times the performance of its previous Mali GPU. Samsung is expected to launch related products in the next few years.

So, we got the chance of playing on one of these Tab at work. Very rudimentary steps mind you. But we think we are able to give some input as what this device can be:

Pros:
- Functionality: nice, good apps and Android 2.2
- Quick and responsive, but be careful when wireless or internet connections are bad
- Ergonomic (I still prefer the feel of the iPad; and no, I don't have one yet)
- Portable

Cons:

- It can be cheaper (come on now, for a 7" costing as much as an 9" + iPad?) )
- as above, can be slow with internet connection
- screen can be small and busy
- non-standard USB plug (mini-USB)
- cheapy plastic feel

It's way over priced at 599. So lately I've really got into the iPad. The apps are really starting to shine and my need for a full OS is becoming less.

Also, qhn, the real underdog, over looked item is the Nook Color. Its spec's are very close to Galaxy Tab, it has very good build quality. IPS screen, can be hacked to function as a tablet. It can run Angry birds once hacked. It only has 2.1 at the moment but B&N is suppose to up it to 2.2 and you get all that for 249.

I bought it to read PDF files because my Kindle isn't good for PDF's but without hacking, I've been playing pandora, listening to podcast, surfing the net.. and yep, using it as an ereader. The size is far better for laying in bed at night to read then the iPad. I'm in love..

It has a few quirks that are easily fixed. Like PDF covers not showing up. Epub shows up just fine.

The main, biggest, almost deal breaker is no ad-hoc support. For those of you who would like to take your jailbroken and rooted phones to use your nook on the go. Not gonna happen.

I almost took it back but decided, I could just take the iPad if I HAD to have internet or just use my bloody phone. But if you got Wifi, I think its a steal compared to Galaxy Tab.

I should have just made a review lol.

Steve, where is the tablet forum

Very true that I tend to overlook the e-Book (almost tablet) devices myself, even though there are loads of them that fit certain needs for many consumers.

And yeah, go for the review of the Nook We can use the Other Manufacturer Review Section of even your own review thread here in the Other News Section :heabang:

Popping up by Amazon for close to €500 mark - a good over €200 drop since the introduction. This is not a good sign

Well - another price drop, down to €500 in Europe, a whopping 37% off since the introduction. Not a good sign for a so called hot device

Dropped below €500 And it is actually being confirmed that Samsung Galaxy Tab Sales Actually "Quite Small"

Samsung Electronics Co.’s Galaxy Tab, the company’s answer to Apple Inc.’s iPad, isn’t selling as well as the company has let on.

In early December, Samsung announced it had sold 1 million, declaring that sales were going “faster than expected.” Then, in early January, Samsung announced sales of 2 million.

But during the company’s quarterly earnings call on Friday, a Samsung executive revealed those figures don’t represent actual sales to consumers. Instead, they are the number of Galaxy Tab devices that Samsung has shipped to wireless companies and retailers around the world since product’s formal introduction in late September.

Pressed by an analyst at an investment bank, the Samsung executive, Lee Young-hee, acknowledged that sales to consumers were “quite small,” though she didn’t give a specific number.

In her comments, she used the terms “sell-in” to reflect Samsung’s sales to distributors and “sell-out” to reflect the distributors’ sales to consumers.

Rumors are such that Samsung would drop its price further below $400 this upcoming April ... April, April ... April's Fool?

Still it would make sense if they really want to come back against Apple's iPAD pricing.

First feedback from a collegue at IFA-2011

The Samsung Tablet 7" is a nice piece of machine, nice to feel, excellent image presentation due to its Super Amoled Plus display. Handling seems to be fluid with the latest Android 3.2, sadly there was nothing to test since no app was being installed - empty shell

Samsung removed every single trace of its Galaxy Tablets from IFA stand, there was not even a small mention about it headscratch.gif

I guess we are leaving this to USA (or North America) for some real review and feedback
