New Dell M101z / 1120 Netbook

Intro

I bought this for a light portable netbook use, but also I did not want a under powered unit either.

Dell has come up with a netbook that utilizes a decent dual Core CPU, and a above average GPU as well.

Also included in this config, 4 GB of memory which is user accessable and upgradable. and a 320 Gb 7200 RPM hard drive.

Last the 11.6 inch display is bright, and easy to view, its a fair bit easier to look at than the 10.1 inch displays.

Specs:

see specs to the right

What's in the Box:

User manaul, AC Adaptor, Drivers CD.

Design

The laptop as configed was the default black case, but there is an optional colors and patterens to choose from. IMO was not worth the extra $ 25.00

Screen:

The 11.6 inch LED High Def true life display is great to look at, and provides a above average quality screen in a netbook of this class.

Keyboard

The keyboard is a very decent size, and easy to type with. Keystrokes feel solid, and it was only the right/left/up/down and the Fn keys that were sized a little smaller to allow the standard keys to be a little larger.

Touchpad

Touch pad is sesitive and took a little while to get used to. for a laptop this sized it not that bad how ever.

Features:

Multimedia Keys

No multimedia keys.

LEDS

The unit has a power Led and a Hard Drive activity Led located on teh front of the laptop.

Wifi

The laptop came standard with a built in Wifi covering 802.11 b/g/n card. It has worked very well, and I have managed speeds of 300 mb/sec with my Wirless N network.

Speakers

SRS premium Surround sound standard
2 X 1.5W speakers for total of 3W standard

Input and Output Ports

Front:

Power / Hard Drive LEDs

Webcam Pictures

Built-in 1.3M Pixel Webcam

Right Side:

Line Out
Mic In
2 x USB 2.0
Power Jack

Left Side:

RJ45 Lan Jack
HDMI Port
USB 2.0 Port
Multimedia Card Slot
Fan Exhaust Port

Rear:

VGA Port

Bottom:

Battery Lock,
Memory access panel
Cool air intake ports

Benchmarks

3Dmark05 score 2326

Win 7 Score 3.7

Size and Weight

11.25" x 8" x 1" at 3.5 pounds

Heat and Noise

The unit has a decent heat vent design, the single fan exhaust to the left side, and draws cool air in through the bottom.

Battery Life

Approximately 5-6 hours of use as configured.

Software

Unit comes with Windows 7, and of course the standard Dell bloatware, incuding Office 2010 trial. A quick reformat imprved boot up times, and drive space.

Accessories

65 watt AC adaptor

Pros:

The 7200 RPM hard drive was a Plus.
Larger 11.6 inch Truelife display.
Faster CPU, and GPU option
Still maintains the notebook size and weight
HDMI port, VGA ports, 3 x USb ports all standard.
Easy memory access

Cons:

Hard drive, PCI wireless card can only be accessed by opening up the laptop.

Conclusion:

This netbook sports the power and design of a standard size basic laptop, but in a small netbook size.

Battery life is very good, may not be the 10 hours the more under powered netbooks have, but still decent.

With the optional 90 w/hr battery you can easily have the 10 hours of use.

Price wise this laptop was $ 600.00 plus taxes, which puts it well above the netbook price, but the not that much higher than the other 11" screen netbooks.

Very nice Dave

Would you be able to separate the benchmarks onto themselves, in the sub-category for the database?

One question Dave. This Inspiron M101Z is not too far off from the M11Z, correct?

The M11z is the Alienware 11.6" gaming laptop. This is the last of the Dell 11.6" laptops. I love this machine, but I don't know what I'm going to replace it with when the time comes. Dell isn't planning to build anything smaller than 13" going forward.

I just bought an Inspiron 11z, but the Sprint version. It has the same case as the M101z but it has an i3 processor instead of the AMD. $319 shipped and not a refurb. I paid $400 for the m101z refurb less than a year ago, and I already have it sold for $300. Not a bad deal!
