Sager 7280 PCtorque

Thread Starter
I just received my Sager 7280 with the 6 core i7 and 12 gig of ram, only 1 Nvidia card since there was no SLI in stock to buy, and also for what I use the machine, SLI does not really improve much (editing and 3D Modeling)

I can say that PCtorque delivered the machine in less than 48 hrs, I ordered Wednesday PM... About 8 PM, and received it Friday noon...

So far, good machine... I do not like very much the screen to be 16:9 instead of 16:10 as was my previous Hypersonic EQ7 and EX7..... And this one got 1 dead pixel... Not a big deal... But annoying anyway.

I bought it without OS since my company provides me with licences for free ( free for me not for them ) so after install Windows 7 Ultimate 64, all was pretty good, except for some very annoying problems with the network which I still trying to figure it out, some really bad speed transfer over a 1 GB connection... And I'm talking of about 2 MB a second between 2 similar computers with Windows 7, which misteriously get better if I re install the drivers... Until I reboot when it get screwed again.... So trying to figure it out what the problem is, and I know windows 7 buggy with networks... I've seen very strange stuff happening I there with the about 10 machines I have at the office....

Second little problem... The raid configuration magically turned off twice on the bios producing a no boot situation, but was just going into the BIOS and turn it on again..., very weird, since is not a BIOS reset, side all the rest was the same... Will see what happens....

So now being 3 AM and after 12 hours of fight with Windows 7 network..... It is time to go sleep and keep going tomorrow... If someone had a similar problem, please let me know.

ok... back to try to get this beast working.... and this morning, really weird, the RAID option was off on the BIOS again, but the time and date was still correct.... so I guess it can't be a battery issue right? Must be something else...

Give PCTorque support a shout? They should be able to give you a tip. What about a BIOS/Chipset update?

I emailed them already last night. The machine is brand new, shouldn't have the latest BIOS ?

Found out that the ESET firewall adapter was taxing the network card heavily.

On a good side, I installed 3 500 GB Hybrid drives in Stripe 0, and I'm getting solid 260 MB/second testing with the AJA System Test using 1920x1080 frames... fantastic for editing.

Not necessarily. System BIOS was being introduced during the planning and assembly stages of a product. There is always possibility of an update by the time the system hits the shelves.

Interesting about that ESET taxing out the card. How do you go around this issue?

well... I started connecting my two laptops, the EQ7 and the Sager directly, without any switch in the middle, so maximum speed should be achieved, and on the installation where I had nothing else but the OS and the card driver, I got a transfer speed of about 117 MB/s transferring a 500MB file. So I was able then to blame the Switch, since if I connect the two together with the switch, I lose the speed again. But not all the time, so I guess there is some problems with the switch.

Then I restored the installation where I have all installed, included ESET Security software. And speed went down to 50 MB/s Turning off the virtual adapter that the Firewall creates, it restore the full speed, turning off Firewall protection does not help, even if you turn off the Firewall, if the ESET adapter is installed, it tax the card... so in one word, I have not fixed it yet. I found other people have similar issues on their forum.

I have to see now if PCtorque, who derived me to Sager to support, gives me a new BIOS if this is not the latest one...

But it might be a conflict with this specific card, since the EQ7 have the adapter too and it does not affect its speed.

Both might need some sort of updates then. Crazy about not being able to be backward compatible (in a sense)

There is definitely issues with the ESET firewall and this computer, would be goo to know i anyone else see it. If I install ESET alone without the firewall, all is OK, with the firewall, all gets slow, even the animation of Windows copy becomes choppy and slow, copying files becomes about 50% to 70% slower, and even for a moments the computer becomes terrible slow and does not respond until I unplug the network cable.

Will report to ESET, but if you buy this machine and experience this issues, big chances is ESET the problem.

It keeps happening.... Is this something to consider it dead on arrival? I mean... I don't think this is normal at all, also the computer freezes from time to time and only unfreezes if I unplug the network cable.

I happened this morning again, and while the computer is asleep, so when the computer tried to go into hibernation, failed and created a blue screen event... there must be something wrong with the motherboard of this computer...

I hope they also consider it is worth a replacement.... now I have to see if I can deactivate all I activated on this computer... what a nightmare....

I don't see why they won't take it back to review and fix. It's not even one week old is it not?

Is 3 days old, if they consider it DOA they should send me a replacement tomorrow... I sent them a video showing how the computer reset itself when goes off... So they have prove of the problem, hope their support is as good as people say in reseller review.

I'll let you know

Thanks, I'll wait a bit, I emailed support already, I think they are in California, so it is a bit early yet..

I was told that a fixed BIOS will be released soon, now I hope there is an easy fix for the network problem too.

Both might be related with the new BIOS update

Make sure you document the conversation as not to let the warranty lapses

Well... Unless someone delete this thread... Hehehe...

I got burned before with Clevo machines, this is my third one, is like a hate and love story.... I hate that I never get a machine straight working at once, but there is nothing else on the market with this performance on this size... So I have no option.

My first one had to be replaced once, sent to repair twice over the 3 year period I had it, the second one 6 months after I got it the video card got fried, then the memory, then the HDDs....

Hope this one be less evil with me.... It seems to work less hot, so probably that will help

PS: the machines where Clevo but no Sager... Just to be fair...
